has anyone installed a putco upgrade to an early model XJ? 84 to 86 are the same I think. I installed one in my 91 and it worked great. I decided to do the same on the 85 but when installing it appears they are different. The harnesss plug in to the passenger side headlight socket on the 91 but if I do that on the 85, the low beams don''t work. The high beams work okay. It appears that the harness on the 85 goes first to the drivers side headlight and that is where the high beam/low beam switching happens. Is this correct? if I extend the putco wiring harness to plug into the drivers side headlight socket, will this correct the problem and work both high and low beams?

No. No factory fogs. The original harness looks like it goes to the drivers side light, then wires going into and then out of that connector over to the passenger side light. This must mean the high/low beam current is coming from that direction right? So I must have to plug the harness into that side to activate the relays properly, am I correct? Just want to get this straight before I go chopping up the harness.

Cruiser’s Headlight Upgrade Harness Instructions
Absolutely plug and play. Remove grille and headlamp bulbs. I fed my harnesses from the passenger side starting between the battery and the back of the headlamp housing, over to the driver side. Plug the driver side bulb into the new harness. Attach the new harness's ground wire under one of the small bolts on the radiator support after scraping the paint off under it. Attach the harness to the existing harness behind the grille working toward the passenger side. . Plug the new harness plug into passenger headlamp. Plug original headlamp plug into receptacle on new harness. Attach the ground for the passenger side just like you did the driver side under a radiator support bolt. Attach relays with provided bracket on the passenger side inner fender. Connect power wires to battery.

Yes, I followed those instructions to a T. Like I said, I did it on my 91 just a few weeks ago and everything went perfectly. And that does have factory fogs. I liked it so much I decided to order another and do it on my 85. So I knew exactly how to do it. I did it exactly the same, but this time, the low beams did not work. The high beams work good, but nothing when I switched back to lows. When I got to looking closely at the original harness, I saw the configeration and thought maybe it was different in the older models. I didn't have the 91 available to compare, my wife drives it to work and I don't get home until after dark so I have not had time to look to see how the 91 harness looks. So, your saying there should be no difference in the older models, 84 to 86? Installation should be the same? Plug the putco harness into the original harness over at the passenger side?

Yea, i was reading some other posts and saw these harnesses have a history of bad relays. I will check into that and make sure the connections are good and the grounds are solid. I'm thinkin it's probably a relay. Thanks for all the help.

Success!!! Changed relays around to see if one was bad and POW, BOTH high beams and low beams work. Must have been bad connection on one of the relay connectors. That was simple. Wish everything was solved that easily. Now on to other projects.
