I always run the head unit, and amp directly off the battery. (have to for the amp anyways) Also all ways run new speaker wire 16ga. (with no splices) Can never count on factory or whats been done before you. Besides factory speaker wire is usually 18ga. The only problem I've had, is leaving it on by mistake. (with volume turned down)

Quote: ok, forgot some stuff. All of my other electric stuff (lights, switches, ect.) all work, its only the ower to the headunit that doesnt (sometimes). Where would I run a wire from? the battery to the headunit? Im not new to jeeps I just really suck at electrical stuff.

I dont think anyone needs corecting cuz what that says is a little confusing but what I saw was the power to the head unit dosnt work sometimes, sounds like a shorted power wire to me.

The first thing you should do is take the ground, head unit side, and put a ring terminal on it, and and get a metal screw and screw it the largest metal bracket you can find, Any DC Electrical device will pull ground from the easiest route possible, This is a common problem in chrysler cars. If you have more problems you can message me. I was a car audio shop manager for about 4 years. If anyone has any audio/alarm questions message me.

to me it sounds like your throwing the thermal shutdown switch in your head unit. which is caused by too much of a draw on a channel. are you wiring directly to the vehicle wires or did you get the adapter that plugs in and you wire the units wires to that? if you are using the connector you definitely have speaker wire with a problem. get a multi meter with an ohm scale and test the wires. attach one end to the speaker connection and the other to the connector in the dash. this will also tell you if the thing is wired correctly and what color wire is what. I know in my XJ barely any of my wires match the colors on the wiring diagrams. hots and grounds are all correct but the other wires are not.

This is correct, any speaker that is blown, will have too high or two low of a ohm load and will make the stereo overheat. Also make sure that none of the speaker connections touch any metal piece of the door.

lestatsghost also has a point that if you no longer have a factory harness the wires in said diagram may not be correct.

hi, guys sorry its been a few days, ive been busy with school. I did end up getting it working. I think the problem was my ground. I ended up pulling out the head unit again, disconneting the stock ground and making a new one. Hooked everything up, drove for about three hours on the highway and everything worked great. Thanks for all the help and suggestions.

My problem is...

When I bought the Cherokee, the front door speakers didnt work. So I replaced the factory HU with an Alpine, and they still didnt work.

One day I was driving and the drivers front door speaker kicked on... weird I know. But not the passanger.

I think it stopped working after that, so Im back to just listening to rear speakers.

Any ideas???

id say trace the speaker wires and see what you come up with. That or check for bad connections

for this problem its just bad wire.... Chrysler just screwed all the front door wiring up as you can see everybody was saying it on this thread lol just run new wires and eliminate the problem... if that doesn't work you know the speakers are shot and you need to replace those

try running a new ground if that doesnt work try hooking up one speaker at a time untill the problem occours once you find when the problem occours could be that the speaker is shorted out

Like I said in my earlier post. This is way I run all new wire, Hot, ground, and speaker. Don't count on factory, or previous owner. And I know what I have, Or where any problems might be.

Quote: Hi, I have a 1999 Cherokee Sport, and have been trying to get my headunit to work for quite a while now. I bought a new Kenwood headunit about a week ago, bought the dash install kit, and the wireing harness (conversion doodad), spliced the wires, wrapped them good, then coated them in electrical tape. Symptoms are as follows: the headunit will work (play radio, cd's, and ipod) but at random points it shuts off. Sometimes for just a second or two, sometimes for 10 minutes. I have double and triple checked all my connections and all seem to be good. Ive checked all my interior fuses, and all those are good. It doesnt happen when i hit bumps, its totally random when it will shut off. I also just got a new battery today and that didnt seem to help either (I needed a battery anyways). So any help would be appreciated, thanks
I would check the ground wire, sometimes the ground connect through the harness isnt anygood. i would relocate the ground somewhere else
