Exclamation Pulled out in front of someone and floored it, now wont shift out of first??

I was leaving the gas station earlier and pulled out in front of someone who was going way to fast and so i floored it and it geared down (obviously) and i didnt let off till around 4000 rpms so it would get up and go ya know? But anyways after that it shifted into the next gear no problems ect....well i stop at the stop light and when i go to take off it stayed in first gear... would not **** for nothing... I had to pull over on the side of the road and unhook my TCU and manually shift just so i could get home. I previously had shifting problems with my Jeep when i first got it and always had to manually shift gears so i knew to take the fuse out of the TCU to manually shift. But anyways i got home and put the fuse back in and hoped for the best...but nothing. Ive been having idling problems with my jeep lately so i replaced my TPS 3 weeks ago hoping it would fix it but didnt. But atleast i have a new one now i guess lol. I was reading and people said TPS but i just put one in. What could be causing this? I got the TCU out of my buddys Jeep before he scrapped it a few months ago.

PS: I had a bad oil leak from my valve cover and just replaced it today so i went to the car wash and used some purple power and pressure washed over in the throttle body area where it was leaking bad abd under the engine area. This happened about 5 minutes after leaving the car wash (gas station)

My TPS goes bad everytime water hits it. I replaced it 3 times until I figured that out lol. mine didnt start shifting weird until a couple hours after water had been on it though. Just a thought.

If it won't shift out of first you might take a look at the speed sensor on the transmission too.

Let the engine idle for an hour with the hood closed and try it again in the morning. Oh, and stop power washing your engine. I can link you to a thousand threads started by people who screwed something by doing that. It's not okay.

I pressure wash my engine bay a lot but I don't go full bore 6" from everything it's more of a mist over everything. Never screwed it up. Take the air gun and blast water out of the nooks and crannys

There's no doubt a lot of people hose out their engine bay and there are a small percentage of those who never have a problem. Could be technique, could be luck, but for everyone who doesn't have a problem there are 50 who do and that's why I don't recommend it. Every XJ out there is at least 12 years old and as time passes, sensitive electronic components become more and more vulnerable to water infiltration. Fortunately, I have yet to hear of any sort of catastrophic failure caused by power washing your engine. In almost all cases the problem resolved itself when the engine bay dried off completely (usually within a couple days).
