Default Pulled the distrubitor, cant get it to properly line up and start.

So i pulled the distributor to replace the leaking paper gasket at the base. Went to reinstall it and ive got no start. Wires are on correctly to the firing order, Cyl 1 is at TDC @ 0 degrees, and when i install the distrubitor, it lines up at the 5 o'clock position. What am i missing?

Just a update...got it to go...idles fine. Rev it above 1700 and it misfires. Getting a multiple misfire code PO300 and misfire codes for cyl 3 4 and 5. The codes only occur after reving up.

Are you sure it's not 180 off?

When you say it should be retarded 15 degrees, where should the rotor line up? Still at the 5 o'clock position?

rotor should still line up. you may have to stick a screwdriver in there and turn the oil pump so it lines up.

i will double check tomorrow if you don't get it done up by then and let you know what i come up with. it's been a while.

so just a update... its running! I didn't up removing the idiot tabs, and in fact i ended up towing it to the engine + machine shop that our shop deals with for machine work on wed, because i still had no luck with it. Turns out there is a special procedure outlined in motor alldata to install the the distributor on the 97 + 98 I6 because its a computer controlled distributor. Something about lining a the oil pump drive in a certain direction, and lining up pins through the distributor to line it up correctly for installation. Either way, it was 80 bucks for them to do it.

Thanks everyone for all their help!
