Default Pull-a-Part SCORE!!!!!

I found an OE swing-away tire carrier on an XJ today... it came home with me (along with all the braces and hardware).

A fresh coat of paint and it will be righteous.

Were these dealer-installed or only available from the catalog?

Other goodies: fan shroud, fender flares, horn button, 4WD shifter, fuse box cover, battery tray, sunvisors, inside tire hold-down, console lid, and a pair of horns.

Total cost: $56

I made the same score about a year ago down in California. I was looking for a trailor hitch. I got the trailor hitch for $50 and the rear tire carrier for $25. About $15 bucks in sandpaper and some rattle can paint and they both look like brand new. Also I've had a 32 inch tire on mine for a year now and it holds it just fine. I've also test fitted a 33 and that fits too.

Solderjunkie, I've seen two style OEM tire carriers for the XJ (at least both were claimed to be OEM). The kind that mounts to the rear quarter and the type BuckB has, which one did you pick up? and do you have pictures (perferably before you put on it, i want to see the hardware)?

Thanks!

It is the style that BuckB has above... I'll get some "before" pics tomorrow before I paint it this week.

There were several "hardening" brackets when I removed it. I'll get pics of all those too. They look to be XJ-specific.

There is a '92 XJ at the local pull-it yard with a new-ish hitch on it. I tried removing it last fall but the nuts on the nut strips have broken loose so the bolts just spin. Any ideas on how to remove it?! It's $14.95 if I can get it.

Take a drill and a 1" hole saw. Drill holes through the side of the subframe where you can fit a wrench on the nuts.

go early and have some cut it off the subframe for you.
