Default problems with XJ! need help!

So I have a 2000 xj with 110k 4.0.

First problem when I come to a stop then begin to start again my jeep would not move for a second or two. Then it would catch hard. The more it reved the harder it would hit. This was only happening 1 out of 5 stops. Then one day I got mad and floored it. Something made a loud bang and now it shakes the shaking is really bad when it goes into lockup. It was low on fluid so my trans may be done.

The next problem is that cylinder 2 isn't running. I changed the spark plug and fuel injector with cylinder 1. Nothing changed. Any ideas. My radiator was cracked so it did overheat a little. No water in the oil and no oil I'm the water. I'm thinking about changing the coil rail unless someone has a better idea.

Any help would be appreciated.

Lol you really beat the **** out of the poor thing. You said you swapped the plug and injector for the cylinder that isn't firing, did you verify if it was or wasn't getting spark/fuel? Could be the wire. What was the condition of the tranny fluid when it was low? I am not familiar with transmissions sorry.

Well it doesn't have spark plug wires. It has a coil bar that is a one piece unit that attaches to all of the spark plugs. I am thinking about changing it but it isn't as cheap as a spark plug wire.

The little bit of trans fluid that was in there looked ok. It was still pink and didn't smell to burnt. I think it is the torque converter. I was just trying to see if anyone else has came across these problems.

I unpluged each fuel injector while it was running and when I unpluged #2 the engine speed and sound did not change.

To rid anything serious I would do a compression check on the #2. If that checks out test the spark plug wire make sure its 100% connected to the plug and to the coil. As far as the tranny I would change the fluid and filter and see if that helps.

When I was just begining to work on cars (about 7 years ago) I was trying to change the oil on a 4runner and accidently drained the tranny fluid... (I know... Rookie mistake...). Anyways I did a test run and it was slamming into gear from a stop postion like you had said. Once I relized what I had did I put new tranny fluid in and some Lucas Stop Slip. And WaaLaa! She shifted perfect ever since. So maybe give that a try.

Yea and it's pretty comman thing that you might have a leak in your transmission line, my friends does that but it isn't bad like your saying I know for a fact he has to put fluid in it every other day so it doesn't slam into gear, also I had problems with my 01 coil pack and my motor was missing pretty bad I changed the spark plugs got a can of layout dye remover witch it's so expensive stuff for a lil can it's like 7 bucks but take off your coil pack completely and clean the hell out of it, sorry it down maybe blow it out I had the same problem as that. And you can also take off the valve cover off of the head get a new seal for it and make sure nothing sticking the lil lifters and valves can jam up and get stuck. In the head now while running your motor without valve cover be aware of spreying oil a lil not to bad but watch out wouldn't wanna get some in your eyes! If all the lil lifters are moving except for on cylinder 2 you might get away with getting a small ball peen hammer and hiring it a few times not to hard and not to soft! I had that problem too.... Also new Iberia in the house woop woop
