It sounds like a u joint is making a weird popping noise attached to the drivelme or something, but I don't know. Can someone help? I have a 88 Cherokee 4x4.

U joints do go bad, and make noise when they do. What makes your noise worse? Better? Worse when turning? Accelerating?

Simple u-joint check is to chock your front wheels, jack up the rear (only one side if open-diff), put your tranny in neutral and rotate your driveshaft by hand while watching the u-joint.... you'll be able to see it if it's bad and if it's popping, you'll definitely be able to tell at that point.

It makes the noise every time when I'm coming to a stop and I hit about 12 mph.

What do you mean by chock? Also, is the stock differential open?

Put a block behind the front tires to keep it from rolling.

Not necessarily. My d35 came stock with an LSD. There is a chance his is a factory limited slip

This. You can take your VIN info to the dealer (or go online to keep.com) and get your build sheet. It will tell you what diff you have. Many different keeps came with LSD in the axle mo matter if D35, D44, or C8.25
