Default Problem with my xj...need help troubleshooting

So...my 2000 xj 4.0 has been stalling out intermittently..sometimes when I'm parked and idling or it has even happened while driving on the highway.

After checking on here i thought it might be the CPS...so i replaced it...still happens..

then i noticed my gas gauge would be at half a tank then next time i turned it on it would be at empty then back to half...so i replaced my fuel pump assembly.

What else could be causing this stalling?

is the gas gauge problem fixed?

Also did you try cleaning the throttle body? Mainly the idle stepper on the throttle body.

also what happens when it stalls are there certain things going on when it does stall ie. low idle, surging idle, higher than norm temp., etc...

Pump...sending unit....2 different parts....The pump and the sending unit make up the WHOLE FUEL PUMP unit. Don't know if you can buy them seperately, I can...but...change the sending unit, and your gauge will straighten out. As far as the cutting out...maybe thats your fuel pump telling you its tired. I just replaced an ECU for one doing just that, after 4 mechanics couldn't diagnose it. Let us know....

When it stalls it just shuts down. Sometimes when idling at a stop light rpms will drop like it's goin to stall then it catches its self and the rpms will go up. Sometimes enough to where I have to step on the break harder to keep it from moving forward

The stalling has also happened twice that I can remember while I was driving 40+ mph. Had to pull over the first time next time I just put it in neutral and restarted.
And it always restarts with no problem right away
