Can it be a bad ground if so does any one know which wires are the ground and where they go to thanks
You need to tell us what year XJ.
Sometimes it doesn't matter. Sometimes it does.
If it is a '97 and up any chance you hear a click coming from the passenger side when you hit the button?

My '00 from the day that I bought her the locks would work 99% of the time.
When they wouldn't would be for something stupid like 15 minutes.
Go in to the store, they don't work, come out, and they do.
One time they did not work for 3 days though.
Anyway every time they did not work I would hear a click coming from the passenger door.
Well it turns out that the passenger side switch is what controls the locks.
So I put in a used one I had. Lasted about a month.
Threw another used one in there. Thinking it has been about 3 years now.
My guess is that you might be having this problem and it is one or both of the relays in there that causes this.
