Default Possible Burnt Torque Converter

Ok i've got an '86 XJ 4x4 with the 2.8 v6 and the 904 tranny. When i bought it, it drove fine. Now, it always revved high, but seemed to be fine. I could go 65 on the highway, but the RPMs were at 5500. Now, what's weird, is it really felt like that's what it was supposed to do. It didn't overheat, didn't make any noise, and didn't vibrate or have excessive compression resistance when you let let off of the throttle.

Well, a few days ago it was having a little bit of trouble shifting from 2nd to 3rd. It still drove, but just hesitated. Well, after i got off the highway, it stopped shifting. I shut it off and started it up again. It sounded like there was a box of rocks inside the tranny and a little bit of smoke was coming out of the dipstick tube when i checked the oil. It would drive about 30 feet in first before it would redline and then just lose power and i would just be able to rev the motor, but not move. I'm thinking my first symptom was the converter not locking up completely, and then it went out altogether at the end.

I would rather not spend a weekend under jack stands so i called a few shops. One shop said they'd provide all the parts and replace the converter for a total of $685. Not terrible, considering what's involved, but a little more than i want to spend. Another shop said if i brought them a converter and 5 quarts of oil, they'd swap it for $275.

Any suggestions?

If the torque converter went out. now u got metal shaving all inside the tranny. The shop is goin to want to flush the tranny or do a possible rebuild. My girlfriends dodge the torque converter went out pulled trans pan. It look like someone dumped a bottle of silver glitter in the pan.

well i called the guy back and now he's saying he's not sure if the torque converter is even the problem. He's asking his builder right now, but says that if the tranny needs rebuilt, it's going to be $800-1200.........

Do the symptoms i listed above sound like torque converter issues?
