have a 98 jeep cherokee xj 4x4 4.0. so heres the deal, i was giving the jeep a test run after all the mods i have just done including the 4.5 lift and 703 injectors. so i was driving it and it was doing well till hit a bump in the road and not to hard the check engine came on and started running rough. got it home and as its idling, its really rough but as i give it gas it smoother but slightly can tell its running weird. so i metered the injectors and they read 12.5 ohms. also i touch them and u can feel them all ticking. i disconnected the battery i tried checking all connections at the computer and unplugging the connectors and checked them and they are all good so i plugged them all back in. also checked just many other connectors as well and all look good. connected the battery back and then started it again and still same. the exhaust smells rich and the condensation is mixed with black stuff as it hits the ground ( not oil). also while it runs it seems like my fuel gauge is not reading fuel level properly. i read and researched that could possibly be the crankshaft position sensor. i dunno. i about to the jeep!! so jeep gurus!!! i just dont wanna be buying all kinds of sensors that dont help me. i did hook to scanner i forgot to mention, its reading p0205 injector circuit/ open cylinder 5 . any help would be awesome!!

 

If it wasnt running like that before swapping the injectors, i'd suspect that's where the problem lies. And a code reader definitely doesnt lie. Were the injectors flow tested before you put them in?

 

Perhaps a chuck of dirt dislodged during the swap and is plugging your newly installed used injector.

Unplug injector 5 and see if it makes a difference in engine rpm at idle. No difference means that injector has some issues.

I would believe the code reader as well, they're pretty accurate.

 

Auto Zone will pull the codes for free as will Oriellys

 

well guess ill check the injectors for sure. i purchased the injectors from someone here. they were tested he said and replaced micro filters. maybe its clogged. thx

 

+1 Check the injectors, sediment & what not gets in the fuel rail (most often in the rear) & when you move it around it loosens up. If that's the case, disconnect the rail entirely & give it a blast of brake or carb cleaner.

 

Just an off the wall thing...a "hunch" Just take two minutes to poke around at the "lower" wiring...on my 90 the wires for the CTS and 02 sensor come off the injector harness and go down there. No clue on your 98, but just take a lo0k and see if hitting that bump didn't help anything in that neighborhood get funny looking. An 02 heater wire shorting might affect the injector harness for example. Idk. Just a goofy thought!

 

I think DFlintstone may be on to something. I'm suspicious of your O2 sensor and/or wiring...seems to be running too rich, judging from your quote above.

Might also reset the code and swap injector 5 with another injector around to see if the problem stays or follows.

thanks for the help yall. ill start by taking the rail off and cleaning it and swapping the injector and see. if that doesnt work, guess ill go deeper into wire harness like yall said. i just thought it was weird it did it hitting a bump but could have jared some trash loose into the injector. hmm. we will see.

 

the code im getting is p0205. i swapped the injector and still runs rich and rough. says injector circuit / open cylinder 5. maybe the PCM? maybe ill swap all injectors back to stock. so weird i hit a dip/bump in the road and all this happened. i also checked grounds and they all seemed tight too. this is my first jeep cherokee xj. just spent so much moola on lift wheels tires and much more and didnt even get to off road it at all. put 2 miles on all these upgrades and now this!! wanna burn this thing at this point!!! lol

 

Bump is probably mere conincidence. Anything electrical can "look" good, use a DMM to be sure. Do any of the connectors have a coating of green goo? if so thats a real bad thing.

 

P0205 (M) Injector #5 Control Circuit Injector #5 output driver stage does not respond properly to the control signal.

Being somewhat of a bonehead here, I might disconnect the battery, jiggle, unplug/replug the PCM connectors, maybe even leave the battery disconnected over night , then see what's up after that.

Just for lack of a better idea...

A couple seem to have been the TPS, one was a rocker off. One seems to have been the puter'.

It's never a bad idea to do a compression test...maybe doing one now might help figure it out? And those wires...one little flaw maybe.
