...referring to the diagrams? Neither harness (factory or vehicle specific) have the brown and pink wires. Here's a pic...

My son cut the wires down on both so he bought 2 new adapters. The new adapters don't match the diagram on the box. The brown and pink are missing. Does that matter.

Not really advisable except for testing, if one works its way out, it could short on something and that usually doesnt end well. Get some heatshrink while you are at it (if you need a soldering iron, harbor freight has everything you would need for cheap).
What do the two unused wires correspond to? They might be something like power antenna and illumination/dimmer (of which the XJ has neither wire from the factory), so you can usually disregard those. My Metra harness came with a table of which wire does what, but the actual harness is still universal to "Chrysler".
