Alright guys, so I have an 88 Cherokee 4.0 straight six automatic.
It was running fine and I'm taking it into my shop next week to put my lift on, so I wanted to power wash all the oil off my block and build up at other miscellaneous parts first. I did that, and I knocked a couple smog hoses from the vacuum harness emission control section (all the black vacuum hoses for smog) undone. I can not find a good picture anywhere showing the correct setup for that, so that would help for one.
Another thing i did while powerwashing was put some water in my reservoir. So the next time I drove it, water was boiling out the reservoir and it ran like **** (black smoke out the exhaust, barely alive) and it's only been getting worse the more I drive it.
I've tried hooking up the smog hoses everyway I think is right, and I just can't seem to get it. It's got to the point where it overheats in under a minute and i have to be on the gas at all times to keep it alive or it will die.
The whole thing smells like bad exhaust, like one breath of it will kill you
I can't figure out what the **** is going on to make it overheat and I can't see how that would be related to my vacuum emission harness.
I want to hook that up right first to see if that fixes any problems, but at this point ill take any advice

What "reservoir"?

 

Coolant reservoir.

 

Could it even be bad gas maybe?

 

Did you check the oil for water?

 

I'm so tired of hearing people of using power-washers on their engines... Gaskets are MOSTLY designed for keeping liquids in, not out, there are exceptions to this though, but even a high pressure stream of water from any hose can get inside some gaskets. I used degreaser and my garden hose today to clean it and she came out great, I went overboard with rinsing though because I thought the rainbow colors on the street were pretty... I ended up with a very small amount of water in my power steering pump and a very small amount in my crankcase, (as far as I know, a half an ounce of water will "burn off") but I was still pissed at myself. Distributor is dry as the Sahara though!!! (I covered it)

The only reason i did it is because most of my gaskets are leaking and im completely rebuilding my motor starting next week, just wanted to work on a semi-clean one. UPDATE: I fixed the idling and smog issue, the only issue I'm still having is it's overheating, bad

It was hard to believe how much air was in my cooling system. Parked it on a hillside and "burped" all the air out of there while squeezing the hoses and filling it with water. She runs purdy again now
