Default performance chips?

Has anyone heard of the "Red line" performance chips? Are they worth buying if i got one pretty cheap? Will they screw anything up like my tranny, or exhaust pressure etc???

I wouldnt waste money on a perf.chip, all they really do is change up fuel curves and spark timing

I would get one but only to go along with other upgrades. Like an ignition kit or something like that. But I have never herd of red line. Some bow tie boys I know like jet chips and in a chev they made a big difference. I have yet to see one first hand in a xj. Quadratec sells them and the ignition I want. They also sell adjustable map and cps sensors. That would do all the chip dose except the shift points I think? Haven't looked into it to much yet.

I have a Jet stage 2 in my jeep with full exhaust and cai and i only got an increase of 1 mpg. I wouldnt pay full price for one though. I got mine on ebay for 25 bucks.

Redline chips are an ebay gimmick. You're paying $25 for supposedly 50 HP and 50 MPG. All that "chip" is, is a $.02 resistor in a black box that is spliced into to Intake Air Temperature sensor. It tricks the computer into to thinking it's always cold. Therefore it's always in open loop so it's feeding more gas. That's where your "HP" is coming from. This will eventually kill your cat and O2 sensors and it's not good to be running rich in the first place. The only reason you feel like there's more horsepower is because you spent money on it. Do not buy that "chip"...end of story.

when i bought my jeep it had the edge trailjammer performance kit which includes the chip, throttle body, and cold air intake, and compared to my dads stock setup, it doesnt seem like its a big difference, and I definitely do not get better gas mileage than him. The only thing i notice is a little better throttle response, but thats probably all to do with the throttle body. I would say dont buy it, I definitely wouldnt have bought what I had, but it was already in the jeep!

That's any $25 dollar ebay chip. Doesn't matter what brand it is, or what it looks like. It's just a cheap resistor in a black plastic box with a couple wires hanging out of it.

anything short of a stroker your only "real" gains are in your aftermarket intake components and exhaust best combined with a tune up ie. plugs, wires and o2 sensors. i have read a writeup for a "supercharger" http://www.4wheeloffroad.com/techart...kit/index.html

Those discount chips are only snake oil, the only real way to increase H.P. is by upgrading cam and doing head improvements, etc. Save your money!

Waste of money. The chips work pretty good for the diesel guys as diesel engines are much easier to mod and tweak. I have yet to hear of a chip that will yield even marginal gains, let alone make the 4.0 into a powerhouse. The engineers who designed it have pretty much found the balance for what they wanted them to do from the factory, a good HP/torque combination. Its not an engine designed for racing or severe duty pulling. Making the XJ do that would consist of spending a whole lot of money! Just my $.02.
