I was under my XJ today for God knows what reason and saw this.

It is under the back seat on the drivers side. Looks like it is may be the fule pump because those look like fuel lines. Am I right?
Sorry about the poor picture, there isn't much room to take pictures under there.

I can't really tell what it is from this picture. The good news is that it is not your fuel pump that is that rusty and nasty. The fuel pump for your XJ is safe inside the gas tank.

Take a few more pics further away to go with the close up one so we can see what part of the truck it is even close too. Get a lil better angle and use paint to draw an arrow to where this is.
You need to start buying some of the rust fix from autozone and clean some of it up.

maybe its a charcoal canaster for the fumes from the tank............part of the emissions junk........changed a fuel pump on a cavalier back in the day that had a similar box. That recycled the fumes back into the engine to be burnt. My 98 has one....

I don't think the that the lines are fuel lines. I think that they may be vacuum lines. I am not sure. I can't find anything in the Haynes Manual or in the FSM. Anyone have any clue what this is?
Oh and I know that there is a cover. What I don't know is what it is a cover for. I will check tomorrow to see if the lines are fuel or vacuum.

Its the EVAP canister for the emissions system... The older Cherokees have them under the hood right below the heater lines, where coolant can leak into them and ruin them... The moved them out under the Jeep with later models.

FSM says:
The EVAP canister is located under the left side of vehicle near front of rear axle.
Mystery solved. I was beginning to wonder if it was some sort of bomb or tracking device.
