Ok i want to paint my bumpers.
I have an 88 and come with those ol skool chrome bumpers.
Now my question is what perp shall i ue.
Ive searched on here and most people use sanding paper.
What grit do i use though.
Some have also primered it. But others say it aint necassary with the sanding.
And last question.
Whats a good paint to use, underliner, Rustoleum, etc?
If its possible i would like a bit of texture if not its ok.
Thanks in advance guys

This is what I would do. I would take some 120 grit and rough it up and get the clear coat off (if there is any) and then wipe it down with a tack cloth. If you're going to paint it, it's better to prime it so the paint has a good surface to stick to. You don't have to sand the primer if you don't want to, I mean it's only a bumper. Depending on what bedlienr you use depends on whether it should be bare metal or primed. My buddy picked up some truck bed liner is a 16 oz. spray can from Pepboys for $8 and it worked great and tested pretty durable so far. I'm pretty sure he just roughed up the paint on the brush guard he was painting, primed it, and sprayed it on. It looks real good. That's what I'm eventually going to do to my brush guard, nerf bars, bumpers, and rocker panels.

Ohh didn't realize they were chrome bumpers until now. It'll take a little work to get the chrome off. Your best bet would be a sanding disk on a grinder to take it down to a rougher surface that the primer will adhere to.

Well I'm trying to avoid wasting some cash on this. To point is I wanna waste bout 20 bucks to paint them while I save up a bit for new bumpers. No point of spending to buy new bumpers from jy to paint them.
I knew the chrome would be a problem. Unless it's not chrome. Might be steel or polished. I haven't tooken a good look at them. But if the are sanding them down is the best?
Has anyone ever done this?

Pull them off, Sand blast them, spray them, I'd probably use Black Chrome (or satin finish) rustolyuim. It would match your mirrors, wipers, window trim, ETC. throw them back on!

Well sandblasting would work great, but you probably don't have a sandblaster. The best way to rough up the chrome would be a sanding disk on a grinder. Something like this for a 4.5" grinding wheel. http://www.penghengabrasives.com/ima...s/DSCN4267.JPG It'll work wonders for you. If you want durability, go with the truck bed liner. It shouldn't take more than 2 or 3 cans to do both your bumpers. This is what my buddy used http://www.levineautoparts.com/duptrucbedli.html . Plus it looks really cool. It has kind of a textured finish.

Yeah I don't have access to a sand blaster. I'm just a 20 year old college student with simple hand tools.
I do have a grinder so I'll run out to home depot to get a sander wheel.
Ok so after I grind do I primer or jus paint over?
Yeah I think Ima go with the Bedliner it looks pretty sweet I love the texture.

Personally, I would prime it so it has a good surface to adhere to considering it'll be a little tricky to get all the chrome finish off. And remember before you prime it, to wipe it down with a tack cloth to get rid of any dust from sanding. Then just spray a couple coats of bedliner on, let it cure, and you should be set.

scuff it with a red scotch brite pad really well , spray it with some metal etch primer , then a little primer surfacer , sand the primer with 320 or 400 then paint it , do not use a grinder or wire wheel , it will look so wavey and un even it'll make you sea sick , if you sand it with any type of machine use a d/a sander , but if you use the red pad like i said you should be fine

Use a grinder with a steel brush attacgment to rough it up a lot then use a rough grit paper like about 50 and then move to 100, 120, 150 and smooth it out a little. Use a metal primer and apply at least two solid coats. Then apply three coats of color or more if you need it. If you want it to keep longer use a UV resistant clear enamel to keep your bumper looking good. Good Luck
