Default P0705 MIL Issue

Hi I am new to the site and just gotta say the forums have been a BIG help in the past. Ok so now the problem. I had a heater core installed in my truck 3-4 weeks ago. heat worked great drove it home that night no MIL codes. The next day the mil light came on. P0705 and no reverse lights. So here is the weird part if i cranked truck and drove it i had no OD but as soon as i turn the truck off and back on it would go into OD and drive fine until i cut if off again. So what im sayin is that it had OD every other time i turned the truck on or off. Ok so I ordered a new NSS. Installed it truck ran fine except for reverse lights. Cleared code but MIL light stayed on with same code P0705. So I drove it for about a day. Then it started doing the same crap. It only works every other time i turn the key. So now everytime i am goin down the road and it wont go into OD I put it in nuetral and cut the truck off then crank it back and it works great. Plus im still pulling code p0705. Please help with any advice. Thanks in advance! Oh BTW 1999 jeep cherokee sport 4.0 4x4

The problem is in the NSS "system". Take the connector by the trans dipstick apart and check the condition of the connections. If you had back up lites and dont get them any time now the NSS or wiring is bad. P705 is the NSS out of adjustment or bad. Could be coolant in the wire connection at dipstick or corroded connector. The ground for this is on the block right near where the hoses go into the cab. Could be a bad connection there.

Thanks I will put it back on the lift and check everything over. So the ground is on the engine block or on the fire wall? Maybe the mech removed the ground to get the heater core hoses or something, dont see why he would have done this but its worth a try to check it. Thanks again, will post results. It just seems so strange to me why it works fine with every other turn of the key.

Ok so I have cleaned the ground wire yesterday and still no luck. I checked the connections evrything looks good. I think i have it adjusted right bc it will start in P and N, but it still wont drop into OD everytime. So I read tht you can put it into R and move the switch back and fourth until the reverse lights come on and adjust it tht way. But my reverse lights wont come on when i move the switch. I have no idea what to try next. I have put a brand new NSS switch on it and its still messing up. Any ideas you guys have please feel free to share. Thanks again for the feed back

Default My problem too

I am having the same problem. Took off nss, cleaned reinstalled, still messed up.. Shut down and restart will not go into 4th, run down road shift to N shut down restart shift is perfect until I shut her down again, then cycle begins again. I am going to clean all grounds and take switch off again and make sure it is clean. Had it checked at Autozone today P0705 code (NSS). I have noticed that when I switch to N sometimes it starts sometime not if I go back into drive the to N it usually cranks the 2nd but sometimes it takes 3 times. Backup lights always work and it always starts in P. Is it that sensative to settings and could it just use a little tweak. Guess I am answering my own question, I may try tweaking before taking switch off. Really don't want to pay 200+ for switch I can fix. Any help would be great. Love the XJ though.... 2000 XJ classic, 4wd, 4.0, AW4 tranny.

Is it doing the same thing as it was before you swapped out the NSS?

If so maybe its in the wiring?

Did you follow the procedures outlined in the above links? If you did and you are still having issues/codes, replace the switch. Cleaning and adjusting CAN but does not guarantee a return to full function. It works if there is not an actual mechanical or electrical failure inside.

Did you look to see if the fuse for the back up lights was perhaps blown/popped.....wiring diagram shows a correlation between the backup light circuit and one of the power supply feeds for the TCM trans control module.

What a trip Shadee! So you turn it off and on, on the fly and it will shift. I'm no help except maybe check the connections on the TPS. (presumably you are moving the throttle when you "administer the cure!"

Down by where the dipstick mounts is where all sorts of crucial stuff grounds. Just wanted to be sure you found that one too. Good luck, please let us know...

Ok folks. Looks like I got it. Took off switch (again) sanded all contacts cleaned and put in dielectric grease. Cleaned all grounds and reinstalled. First time I payed too much attention to back up lights for adjustment. You will get a better adjustment if you center on neutral. I did it to neutral and it is now perfect. MEL is finally out and shifting is perfect. Overdrive every time. Thanks for help and I hope this helps someone else.

I know I hi-jacked this thread but it was for the better good. Thanks everyone.

Just did a head replacement on my 2000 xj, and have started running her more and more. Made a 120 mile round trip today, and the P0705 code came up, when my jeep went into passing gear kickdown.

Reading all this here, and NOT having play in my shifter, or reverse light problems, I was praying my NSS was good.

For me, it was as simple as unconnecting the light grey connector (circled in pic),( alot of corrosion fell out. ) I cleaned it up with a small amount of contact cleaner, and some dielectric grease on the male side.

When my original 0331 head cracked, I had antifreeze EVERYWHERE. This was one of the few connectors, I did not mess with during the repair.

Thanks for all the help here, worked like a charm. Hope it is this easy for everyone.
