Default Overheating in very cold weather

92' Cherokee Laredo 4.0

This morning I started the jeep and took off down the road, I noticed maybe 3-4 miles into my drive that the temp gauge wasgetting "hot", it wasnt extremely hot (between the middle line and the line before the red) I kept driving and the temp dropped back down. I pulled into the local parts store and got some 50/50, filled up the overflow tank and pulled back onto the road it continued to rise above normal and the drop back to normal the rest of my short trip. Any help is greatly appreciated. Btw temps are around 34* where I'm at, not that, that matters.

Is the radiator full? Adding to the over flow will not help much of the radiator is low.

I plan to check that once I get back to the jeep. I had to let it cool off.

Checked the radiator and it was totally full which I've never seen before. It was full all the way to the top, usually sense the neck leans back I don't usually see fluid all the way to the tip top of the neck.

Sounds like your thermostat is not working properly. I would replace it and give the cooling system a good douching.

Sound to me like you had more water than antifreeze in the Jeep. The water in the radiator and hoses froze and wouldn't let it all circulate. Once it melted it cooled the engine off.

That's kind of what I was thinking. It has a lot I antifreeze and 50/50 in it. Hopefully that's all it was cause its running great again.

If it ain't full to the "tip top" when the motor is cold, u can bet air is in the system. (ok, 1996sport, one more time. LOL)
