Default overheating cherokee

i recently bought my second cherokee, it is a stock 1996 cherokee sport. it has the inline 6 with the ax-15 transmission and only has 120,000 miles ,the previous owner replaced the radiator water pump along with all new hoses. yesterday i replace the dummy gauges with the full gauges out of my parts jeep, and noticed that the water temperature was running at around 240. the electric fan wasn't turning on so i wired it to a switch and there was only a minor difference, what else could it be??

Verify with a temperature gun that your gauge is reading correctly. There is a chance that it is not.

Have you checked the oil to make sure he didn't bust the head gasket. Something made him change the water pump...

he may have let it overheat bigtime.

You will have coolant in the oil.

You should also replace your mechanical fan clutch, that could also cause you to overheat.

You should still verify the temperature. Your gauge could be off.

This.

Maybe the temp is real, maybe it's not.

Hate to be chasing a ghost if it's not.

An infrared point and shoot gun pointed directly at the thermostat housing will tell the story quickly.
