Actually, appears to me to be a burnt out resister NOT capacitor. the capacitors are standing tall directly next to the resistors... I have a 91 with same issue and figured out a fix by soldering the resister on the other side of of the board from point to point and bypass the trace, but need to know the correct ohms of the resister.
On mine it looks like the resister closest to the display led is burnt as it fell apart as I touched it, . As soon as I figure the ohms of this resister I will post it. If anyone else knows please post.
Hope this makes some kind of sense

thanks, makes perfect sense, if you find out, please let me know.

Default overhead console quit working

I know this an old thread, but I have a 99 XJ. After replacing my headliner a couple years ago, my Overhead display is stuck on MPG only. Won't reset or change to other options such as temp, mileage to empty, etc. I took apart and inspected and don't see any damage to wiring/buttons/circuit board. Any ideas?

Maybe connection with the connectors? Measure ohms of resistance if you can. Also, I recommend that you attach photographs to your own thread and link this for research material in that first posting of your new thread.

I know this is an old thread, but not only are some people still commenting on it, it was one of the first threads that came up when I had the same issue. I want to correct the misinformation in this thread since it's left unaddressed and this is a very common issue with the overhead console.

I want to point out that these are not resistors. WizardPC is correct - they are capacitors.
The resistors are the black and blue components on the board that have numbers written on them. The numbers on the resistors are a code to tell you the resistance (google "SMD (surface mount device) resistor code" and that should help you figure those out if you need to replace a resistor; it's different than 4 band resistor codes). No need to measure resistance since it's defined on each one.
However, the light brown surface mount components are indeed capacitors. So these are capacitors. I believe they are ceramic capacitors. SMD capacitors usually do not have their specs written on them like resistors do - I don't know why; this makes replacement difficult if yours is blown out since you'd have to measure capacitance of known good caps. However, someone on the NAXJA forum already has this figured out so no need to measure capacitance either!

Hopefully to save others from hours of googling, I'll post what I found here:

This thread has instructions on repair. I haven't followed them yet but they seem complete (minus the photos that photobucket killed). The specs for components are listed. So this lists out the specs for the required capacitors.
https://www.naxja.org/forum/showthre...1057433&page=3

This is such a common problem - I'll be trying to follow the repair on my own board that has blown capacitors (and probably shorted traces) and post here or on my own build thread.

Final post here - just to wrap this up.

I have posted my work and interpretation of the NAXJA instructions on my build thread here:

I hope this helps anyone else that has that problem in the future.

Yikes - I don't have much experience with repairing damaged boards like that. But I guess you won't know how far gone it is unless you clean it up a bit with alcohol and use a multimeter to test out the traces.

I did see someone on ebay that repaired boards for a fee. I was doing my own, so didn't want to pay someone else to do it. Might be worth a shot for you though if you get in too deep.

Just what I have in my post / link to my build thread. There is a link to the NAXJA forum there too - been a while - that might have more details.
