I would assume that the temp gauge in the overhead console would still need the sensor (no idea where they would have that, sometimes on the dash), The compass would need a simular sensor. So it isn't as simple as hooking up power and ground. Do a search about where those sensors are, when you find out go back to the yard and grab those puppies.

Then give us a how to article and provide pictures

I just recently had an overhead console installed in my 1999 Jeep Cherokee. I had an auto upholstery company redo my headliner (made it dark grey), and they also re-covered and installed the overhead console for me. I was able to find the console from a member here, lucky for me it came out of another 1999.

For me, everything works except for the temperature, and that's just because I haven't installed the sensor yet.

So you can get all the features of the overhead console to work in a '97+. I suggest trying to find one out of the same model year as yours because then it's plug n' play. I'm not sure about pre-'97, though.

Most of the harness should be under your headliner, Expect the temp sensor. And I believe those are mounted up behind the front bumper.

So, where's the temperature sensor? And generally how accurate are they?

I was told the same thing. There should be a harness for the same model and year under the head liner. I tried to dig around for it a little with not luck, but I didnt dig too much eiter.

From what I've gathered the sensor is behind the grill. It might be better to order a new sensor just so you have a good one. But cut off the plug from the jeep in th SY so you can have it for the wire your running from the overhead console....
