Hi all. After losing my oil last night and hoping that I spotted the gauge quickly, I'd love an oil light.
Are there any oil pressure switches out there for these that can do dual readings, one with various resistance for the gauge and a solid reading for a separate light?
You could put a "T" in the gauge fitting and install a pressure switch to turn on a light. The only problem is finding a switch that turns on before the pressure gets to zero. I think the older GM cars had them that started flickering at 15 psi, but don't quote me on that.
I'll have to do some digging for one with the correct pressure and I'll certainly have to get a T-piece. My plan is to piggyback onto the handbrake light switch on the base of the handbrake straight to the oil pressure switch. When the handbrake is in use then it won't work as an oil light, but while driving it'll give me a red light to say stop.
Does anyone know what thread size and pitch is used on the oil sensor?
So to draw this thread to a conclusion here's what I've done. Sensors may vary depending on year of Jeep.
Items:
Oil pressure switch: OEM-56026719
Oil pressure sender: OEM-56026779
1/8 NPT Oil Pressure Gauge Sensor Adapter Tee Fitting
Instructions:
Remove old oil pressure sender
Screw oil pressure sender into Tee fitting. Use PTFE thread tape where necessary
Screw Tee fitting into engine at a usable angle
Screw oil pressure switch into Tee fitting
Run a wire from the engine bay through the bulkhead, underneath the dash and to the handbrake lever
Connect the wire to the handbrake switch with a piggyback crimp terminal and fit to switch
If available, solder a new or junkyard connector for the oil pressure switch to newly ran wire and connect to switch. If no new connector is available (like mine), a spade crimp can be opened up to get a fit on the switches pin. Fit connector to switch
Reconnect original oil pressure sender wire to sender
Test starting the Jeep with the handbrake off and the light should go out as the oil pressure rises.
So does that mean if I wanted to do this, I am pretty OCD keeping my eye on the oil pressure gauge cause I have an '00 with the 0331 head, could I do the same with screwing the same idiot light sensor and wiring it like you (if possible in an '00) into my set up here?
The capped off one is 1/8 pipe thread.
This is the set up I rigged so I could put a mechanical gauge to my Jeep without removing the oil sending unit.
Edit: I just remembered that I have a check gauges idiot light in my Jeep. Duh.
I don't see why not. I don't know the specifics on oil pressures, if they ever changed through the years, so it may be worth getting the idiot light sender that matches your year as my one says 1992-1996 I think. As for the light, the warning lamp circuit is a simple one that earths out at the handbrake so by moving that earth to the oil switch, it won't hurt any systems.

Well I would probably not do this and that was before I realized I have the check gauges light but they don't seem to make an idiot light one for my Jeep.
In the Napa catalog there is just the one. Same in my '00 parts catalog.
I am going to assume an '00 could have come with idiot lights.
You could always add a big bright light on the dash for it! Just hook ignition circuit power to the light and ground it on the switch. The cigarette lighter is a good source, although the light would be on while you're sitting there listening to the radio. LOL!
