As soon as you can get some pliers on it, use them and get a buddy to turn the crank(with the bolt on the harmonic balancer) while you pull it out. Insert new seal. (5$ish) same as before, get it started and have a buddy turn the crank to pull it in. Rtv the ends of the seal. Put new seal in the bearing cap. Go rent yourself a torque wrench and torque the two bolts to spec. (They are on the site somewhere and in a Haynes manual or equivalent. ) pop oil pan back on. Put (6) quarts in and your done. Also on your oil filter, you can see that it doesn't mount directly to the engine block. There is a metal thingy in between it that angles the filter. There are 3 seals in there that look like they could be leaky. But rear main is more important.

if it is the rear main, and i think it is that, how long could something like that go on before causing further damage? like i said, will try and get on this tomorrow, but just wondering

As long as you keep oil in it and it keeps pressure its fine. Its more of a nousence than anything. That being said, long drives will coat the under side with oil which could harm transmission stuff (nss in my case got all gummed up) get it done, it takes forever but its worth it. No more leak, no more smoke from oil on the exhaust. Peace of mind. Oh and the confidence and pride of doing things yourself

pics would be good. it may be beyond me to attempt, but would if you can be bothered would love to see and then i can assess if i can take it on. in your opinion, with basic intelligence, is it a job i could do. bear in mind, i'm mechanically minded, but have little experience with jeeps.

The rear seal is a lil complicated but checking the oil sender/adapter it easy to check. Cool the engine then clean that area well with brake clean. Watch for drips very closely with a flashlight. If its the sender is leaking it will be leaking from threads or plug or where plastic and metal come together. If its the adaptor it could leak at the block or at the outer edge of the adaptor. just watch for a leak closely, the cleaner you get it the easier it will be. Im posting pics now.

Wow. Allot of posts! With oil everywhere it's a bit tough to see where it's coming from. I go buy a can of foaming engine degreaser, spray it around under there while it's warm. 1/2 hr or so later blast it good at the car wash. I wear hat & glasses, grimy cloths. Get it good on the right side and around the pan and bell-housing. Stay away from the distributor, the throttle body and the manifolds. Now you gotta watch it. Don't drive home or go flying down the hwy. Watch close with a good light and you will probably see where it's leaking from the oil filter mount O rings and blowing back and dripping off the bell-housing.

And like was mentioned, it also blows back onto the exhaust pipe and burns/smells.

Second thought. Wonder if a guy couldn't just zip-tie a diaper around the filter mount?

Your 5 year old....a future "motor head" in training!

Good stuff getting him or her under that vehicle to show them that some people still actually work on their own vehicles!!

I would rather have a gear head kid than one that sits in front of the Nintendo all damn day. My nephew is 16 and all he does is play those stupid video games and ill bet your 5 year old is smarter! We need to teach out younger generation a skill set!

Ain't that the truth. I let him drive the Jeep, on my knee, me on pedals, him on steering wheel. He loved it.

Took XJ to a mates today who has some tools. Cleaned up filter and sendin unit, they were actually pretty good. What we did find was the cover on the gasket has a leak at the back. Think it's called that, it's the black cover that runs the length of top of block. Leak is at rear left and that could well account for the drips lower down. Going to clean that up and maybe replace it.
