That's the rear main seal area. But, almost every oil leak up above it will leak from there cuz it's the lowest point. Check around the valve cover and oil filter specifically and take a photo of any oil leak you find there.

Ive worked on tons of different engines over the years and a rule that I always fallow is 10 psi per 1000 rmps is safe. So if u idle at roughly 1000 rpm and have roughly 10 psi you are sare.

oh and ps looks like ur rear main is leaking .....how many miles? Ever smell burnt oil?

thanks for the pressure info. i got 73k on there. there is a slight burning smell sometimes, but it smells more of just heat and engine, and possibly a little platstic, but i'm pretty sure its just hot engine. i live up some pretty steep hills in the canyons, so whenever i get home, the engine has been doing some work to get me up there. if it was burnt oil, what would that be caused by?

and what's the rear main? sorry for ignorance, i'm learning, mostly with help of you good folks on here, but it will take some time...

Cruiser 54 is right......check that oil filter adapter .......even if that isn't dripping all the way back there those are known leakers. Its the small alum. Elbow between the filter.and the block. There are 3 o rings in there and they always split and leak.but with the residue on your inspection cover I would say rear main probably and possibly something else. Oh and the rear main is a 2 piece seal that goes around the crankshaft where it exits the block in the rear. I can't post pics on threads for some reason but check my pics and I will put.one up.

The rear main seal area is where your photo shows the drip. Be sure to check the rear of the valve cover and around the oil filter as suggested first.

And last one. Been reading up on this, to me it does look like the rear seal. But if anone else can shed any other light on this, much appreciated. I have been using heavier oil already, which was one of the things I read can help stop the seal leak. If I wanted to get the seal changed, is this an expensive job? And if I didn't, what's the long term issues of leaving the leak, but maintaining my XJ as well as it now is - regular oil change/checks?

cheers for all the help, 'tis really appreciated.

Oil filter adapter housing seals or possibly the oil pressure send unit mounted above the oil filter.

thanks for that. i had a new oil pressure send unit put in a few weeks ago - and thinking about it the leak seems to have started then. coud that be the cause?
