Do you have some fear of looking at this yourself?

See post # 31. Go look near the oil filter area. See if the oil is coming from the oil sender mounted above the oil filter.

The sender is above the oil filter no matter where you are.

Hey man. Yea, your rear main leaks, that's what mine looked like. Also, it does look like your oil filter adapter is leaking. you can replace the 3 o rings and it wont leak. or eliminate the adapter altogether. and on your Oil pressure sending unit. Take it off and put some engine teflon (like teflon tape for plumbers) Mine leaked when I put a new one in. Took it off, teflon'd it and no more leaks.

actually just been having a look - the oil filter looks good, its firmly in place and no oil coming out - a tiny bit of residue on the underside, but nothing really. the sending unit also seems good- again firmly attached and no evidence of oil on or around it at all. so i think i can eliminate these two things? what you recon? and if it's not them, seems to me like it would be the rear main. is replacing the seals on that a big job (i.e. can an idiot like me attempt it, with only a basic set of tools and the help of the good people on here?)

Yes that's the first thing I ever did to my Jeep and I knew nothing. Drain your oil. Take off your oil pan.(mark/take a picture where each bolt goes) let it sit a while. Take off the rear most bearing cap. Make sure you know which direction it goes. Use a punch or something like it and a hammer and carefully punch out the top half. As soon as you can get some pliers on it, use them and get a buddy to turn the crank(with the bolt on the harmonic balancer) while you pull it out. Insert new seal. (5$ish) same as before, get it started and have a buddy turn the crank to pull it in. Rtv the ends of the seal. Put new seal in the bearing cap. Go rent yourself a torque wrench and torque the two bolts to spec. (They are on the site somewhere and in a Haynes manual or equivalent. ) pop oil pan back on. Put (6) quarts in and your done. Also on your oil filter, you can see that it doesn't mount directly to the engine block. There is a metal thingy in between it that angles the filter. There are 3 seals in there that look like they could be leaky. But rear main is more important.
