Oil pan replacement
I’m replacing the oil pan in my 89. When I was removing the old pan a U shaped bracket came off of the oil pan. It’s looks like some kind of strap that follows the contour of the oil pan on the OUTSIDE where the rear main is located. My new pan didn’t come with one. Is this strap necessary? I can’t see how it would help anything. Also the pan is on with gasket maker. Any points on how to get this pan off? Please help.
It's there to help seal that section. Some folks leave it off with no impact. If the old pan is glued on, hammer a thin putty knife in the seal all the way around. Fix and dents or damage to the lip afterwards. Also leave a couple longer screws in so the pan does fall off all at once. If you're not lifted, you might have a challenge maneuvering the pan out.
