scrape the heck out of it, move on to a wire brush to get all the crap off both the pan and engine block. I then used brake cleaner to blast the last bits of dust/oil away.
I used a small bead of grey RTV all the way around the pan (larger blobs at the corners front and rear), let it set a minute then shoved drywall anchors up thru the bottom (holds the gasket in place when trying to get it back in), and laid the pan gasket over the drywall anchors, a light bead on the top of the gasket (larger blobs at the corners front and rear) and let it sit a minute.
Get it into place underneath, press it into place and start pulling drywall anchors out and replaceing with the bolts.
By the time all the bolts are finger tight, the rtv will be ready for the first round of tightening the bolts. I went around the pan the first time just snugging it up light, then around it the second time snug it up more, and the thirrd time around for good.
Going around the pan slow lets the RTV spread out evenly (my theory).
No leaks.
Most folks will say the RTV is overkill (except on the corners) but I was a scardycat and RTV'd anyway.
