Could be. Also could be the Oil Filter Adapter. Oil Pan Gasket or Valve cover. The can all leak on the exhaust and cause give it a good black smoke.

Trekker it is a lot easier to find after cleaning the motor. I use engine cleaner and the self car wash place. You can't really see because they all look like they are dripping in the same place. Smoke can be either white, blue or black. It can be a little or alot depending how much is hitting the exhaust and how much is being blown off by your speed.

If you have an auto trans make sure it isn't over full. If the fluid is over full it will expand when it gets hot and overflow out the breather, esp when working the motor like at 55+ on the highway.

If its leaking ON the exaust it can be messy down there... you can drive around, stop and look to see where the drops are coming from.. My front main was leaking and smoking at ALL speeds... and i could tell it was taking a quart a day.

Another place to look which I know is goofy but mine is leaking there...Look at the hole where the distributor mounts, if the gasket is bad or missing it will leak..I had no clue there was a gasket there or suppose to be there till mine started leaking..lol it drizzles down the block to back by the bell housing and I was thinking my rear main was already bad till I tracked it down..Funny thing is it doesn't leak all the time..

Hey TJ, so I'm having the same issues and have white smoke....seems more like steam coming from under my car after going up hills and winding roads. This just started happening today, yesturday after taking it to the car wash coolant started leaking...I checked the coolant overflow, which is right below full and checked the reservoir, the cap won't come off and I think there may be a blockage in the line to the radiator. So, I made an appointment to take it in Wednesday ( I have an oil leak which could be part of the problem) so I'm having my mechanic fix it. It's a total bummer, but I'm just glad I made it home. Hope your problems were solved. Any advice from anyone?

Look at the exhaust pipe where it curves from the pass side to drivers side. My XJ had an oil filter adapter leak which was hitting the pipe and left a thick crusty layer on the pipe. But then again it also smoked the most when stopped with a hot engine......

That is exactly the same issue with mine....thick crust on exaust pipe. It only smokes when I stop and park, of course that's when it's the hottest. Not when I'm driving. Anyways, I'm taking it to the mechanic tomorrow. It's leaking a lot when it's been running for awhile....I just can't wait for this to be fixed...it will be so nice to drive my Jeep without worrying. I didn't drive it all day today....

Default Similar oil leak

So far I have replaced the rear seal, oil pan and valve cover gasket. Checked the oil filter and o-rings, pressure sensor, distributor and cannot fing where the oil is leaking from. It seems like it is actually leaking into the bell housing and dripping out between the bell housing and dust plate. When sitting and idling it is tight as a drum. After a short ride it is pouring out. I have an automatic transmission, if that makes a difference. The back of the block is dry and the rear seal isn't leaking. Any ideas?

After some good advice I pulled the oil pan off and found that I pinched the gasket into the pan by the rear seal. Picked up a new one and made sure it was in the channel with a mirror before torquing it down. Completely dry now. Awesome!
