Default Oil Filter Problem

Hello Jeep Folks,

I recently had a shop change the oil in my '95 4.0L Cherokee. Driving home from work the very next day, the oil pressure indicator pegged out, the jeep began blowing cloud of blue smoke, and oil was leaking profusely from the area near the oil filter. I ended up having the jeep hauled home and am concerned about potential damage. Upon opening the hood I noticed the oil filter looks much smaller than what I'm used to seeing in there. It is a Valvoline VO25 which according valvoline's website is correct however when I cross reference online with the Napa oil filter recommended for this jeep it is NOT the recommended filter. Has anyone else had this problem? Could the VO25 be a wrong filter and have caused this to happen? Just looking for some answers. Thank you!!

What do you mean by pegged out? Was the pressure high or low?

Did you make sure they put the correct amount of oil in before you drove away?

Was the exhaust pipe blowing out blue smoke or was the smoke from burning oil on the engine/exhaust?

1. Remove the filter and check to see if your oil filter was installed with the old filter gasket still on, resulting in a "double gasket". This will create a big oil leak.

2. Inspect the oil pressure sending unit, it is right next to the oil filter. Sometimes that sending unit gets damaged during an oil change.

3. On the dipstick, where does the oil level now read?

The Valvoline places like to use undersized filters. That one has the right thread and gasket, it's just shorter and smaller diameter. I'll bet they either didn't tighten it or broken the oil pressure sensor.

Did you take pictures and call their headquarters? If there is engine damage, you'll need to backup your claim with some documentation.
