my oil filter housing has been leaking for some time now and today i decided to do something about it. Thanks to the info i have found in the write up section I gave it a go.
Everyone in that post used a T60 torex for freeing the housing, but that seemed obsolete for me. I have a 93, 4.0 with a stock horizontal oil filter position. the T60 didn't catch any treads and felt even to small. i'm gonna give it another go tomorrow. thanks for the help.

 

The reason it didn't fit is cause it isn't a torx. It's a 9/16 hex (allen key)

Get a 9/16 nut, or a short bolt with a 9/16 head, and see if it fits in there. I bet it will. Try and find a punch that you can fit an open end 9/16 wrench on. Take this punch and cut off about an inch of it. Now you have a 1" section of 9/16 hex stock. Use a box end 9/16 wrench to loosen your filter adapter bolt.

There's 3 O-rings in there. You may want to go to the dealer. It's easier than the time you'd spend haggling with the parts store clowns.

 

farmfuel thanks a lot for your help, I checked the fitting with a 9/16 bolt head a had laying around and it fit perfect. I just got back from my local hardware store but they were out of (of course) 9/16 allens. Going to get back into that project tomorrow.

 

I'm glad I could help. I didn't find this out till not too long ago. I had hell finding a 9/16 allen key, but I've got a million punches, and just cut an inch of one. It's got to be real short to fit in the little area you have to work with.

 

Just a note to help those that want a 9/16 hex wrench. I picked up one a while back and had a hard time finding them. Turns out the local electrical supply stores carry them for contractors as they are used alot by electricians. Try there in your area if you want an allen to keep.

 

Does anybody know if the bolt for the Oil Filter Mount for a 1994 XJ 4.0 is a torx or allen or what. What do I need to loosen this bolt? And what size? I read that some years close to 94 have a T-60. I assume most 1994's are the same.

 

Best to poke your noggin under there with a flashlight and have a gander.....

My '94 had a torx. And it put up a hell of a fight (thread sealer). I found it easiest to get from laying behind the tire pulling down. Played hard to get and then POP! thought the torx head broke off, but nope.

 

Torx for anything is absolutely criminal. My XJ leaks in this spot a little bit, and I'm terrified to approach this knowing there's a torx in there, and the drama I've already been through with various Torx on the XJ (seat belts, door hinges).

So what do you do if you bust the bolt?

 

Make sure to get a black (anodized? need coffee) 1/2 " drive torx bit. Black usually indicates that it can withstand an impact gun. I would definately not use any "Great Neck" cheesy junk for this. The factory used red sealer (230?) on the threads which is the strongest there is.

Imust have attempted breaking the thing loose on 3 seperate occasions from the top, no dice. Finally, trying at the bottom and giving it a couple of good tugs with no result whatsoever (actually the cheater pipe I put over my breaker bar was starting to bend) I got all set for another hard tug, and she just popped loose and everything went airborne, lol.

Using the bit I described, I don't think the bolt would break, it's a pretty hefty piece. Just try and give it a few whacks to shock the threads loose and make sure the bit is fully seated!
