Need to clean oil off side of engine and replace VCG. I'm worried using degreser and washing will short cuircut some of the electrical (done it before even when wrapped to protect) on my 98 xj. Any advice? I've got some serious build up too.
thanks
oh, and what type gasket should I get? part number?

When I have a heavy oil or dirt build-up on engine I usually leave the engine running while washing it. The heat tends to keep things drier than when its off.
On a gasket don't have a part # but buy the Fel-Pro a rubber one instead of the cork.

Rear of the valve cover historicly leaks the worse. The gasket comes by itself in my use. I get those at Advanced or use the NAPA gasket.
