Question Oil Change Interval - am I changing too soon ??

I've been changing my oil every 2500 miles for at least the last 20 years. Before that, was every 2000 miles.
I'm running Delo 10w30 and Napa Gold filters (1515 in my XJ, 1085 in the wife's WJ). And, I'm thinking I may be wasting time and money and 5000 mile changes may be possible without causing any additional wear or damage.
My local Walmart doesn't carry the Delo I like anymore so will be switching to Rotella T5 at next oil change.
So...what kind of oil change intervals are you all doing and do you think I'm changing too often?

I use 10w-30 as well. My jeep sees less then 5k miles a year. I usually go by months or change the oil during a set time. Depending on how much you drive her, 2500 mile intervals may be quick.

Well, about 10,000 miles a year on my XJ, mostly around town, and around 15,000 on the WJ with more highway mileage. Both have 4.0 motors.

If I am making mostly short trips then I use a 3000 mile interval. For my commuter vehicles I use 5000 miles.

I do the same. Not having a life, being older, and living a 1/2 mile from work I change my oil every April, 10W-30, and October, 5W-30. Napa conventional with a Gold 1085. Figure there is about 2500 miles on the oil change tops. And this is the only vehicle I own

Generally speaking, this is my oil change interval strategy for the 4.0 with conventional oils.

It really depends on HOW you are driving it. Short trips are tough on oil.

The Delo I've been using and the Rotella I'm going to be switching to are both semi- synthetic so was curious if that made a significant difference in interval mileage.

I use mobil 1 10w40 full synthetic and changed my oil every 5000 to 6000 mile , and I feel that is a little early .

Short enough to not get the oil up to temp. There is no mile distance cause everyones commute is different. If the oil doesnt get hot enough it collects things and doesnt get the chance to boil them off.

Every 5000 miles.

Factory interval back in the 80s was 7500 miles.

Never had an issue with that either. and oils were no where as good as they are now.

IIRC, the interval for severe service like postal, taxi, or police vehicle was half that.

This is the wisest rule of thumb Cruiser shares here. And most severe service vehicles are changed by hours rather than miles. Abrasives 10-20 microns in size that the filter still allows to pass through the medium are still abrasives and need to be removed, no matter what mileage your oil claims, it cannot miraculously remove these abrasives.

I wonder if these abrasives show up in an oil analysis?

Sure they do as contaminants soot, silicon, sodium and potassium. But I think everyone disregards these and concentrate more on the wear metals and properties of the oil it's self.

Guess I never thought of contaminants as solids.
