Default oil change fixes always on Part Time indicator problem (1990)

My part time indicator light has up until now always been on, even when the shifter is set to 2H.

By watching the tires spin in the mud I've figured the issue is only a problem with the indicator light. That is, with the shifter in 2H the part time light may be on but the car is really in 2wd as it should be. Sometimes under heavy load, i.e. uphill highway, the light would turn off.

The guy I bought it from thought it was an issue with some cracked vacuum line out the back of the transfer case.

However after changing the oil today I've noticed the part time light stays off regardless of engine load. What's up with this?

Under heavy load you loose vacuum. Id check for sticking vacuum switch on rear of transfer case by rear shaft .

You need to check the vacuum system lines and reservoir.

242 transfer case, right? Maybe you bumped a wire while you were under there. In any case you might want to check the wires coming from the switch on the case.

Stupid question here, freegdr:

Vacuum switch looks like...a switch? As in light switch?

DFlint: Yes, it's a 242 transfer case.

Unsure of 242 but mines here...Just remove lines and unscrew. See if ball on end moves freely up and down.
