Ok so i was driving home from target and for some reason decided to be an idiot and do a big burn out and then i hear a loud bang and a bunch of clanking, so i stop, get out and look under me jeep to see my driveshaft hanging tehre by the rear axle. it busted loose from hte t-case, the cv joint was still attatched to the t-case, the x-joint/cross-like thingie on the driveshaft had ripped it self free from the cv joint. My jeep has a SYE and custom cv driveshaft so i took it to 4WheelParts and they said to call some driveshaft place and theyre basically gonna cut the driveshaft at the cv and then weld a rebuilt cv to it, then they balance it and stuff. Seems liek a sketchy idea to me, what do yall think?

no its not sketch if it is done right. but personally i wouldnt have it done that way. why not just go to the JY and pick up a stock auto XJ front DS and use it in the rear? cheap easy fix.

worth a try, yes you can use a front in the rear if you have a SYE. and if you think about strength, you use it in the front so why cant you use it in the rear?

trust me it will work.

well as for strength, the rear is designed for more heavy duty use, thus the rear almost always has a bigger axle

if you compare the stock front to the stock rear, to me it seems that the front uses thicker metal but i could be wrong.

either way i know guys running 37s on a stock front shaft in the rear with no problems. trust me if strength is your issue you will be fine.

me

ive been running a front driveshaft in the rear for about a year.my ring and pinion stripped before a front driveshaft broke, so that must say something about the strength.

plus, now you only need to carry one spare.

Well, strenght is definitly not an issue since I'm running 32s and will only go up to 33s. I will go ahead and hit up a junk hard for a front shaft, is all I need to look for an Automatic 4x4? Any year specifications or anything??? What parts do i need attatched, keep in mind my stock rear was a Custom CV driveshaft, i believe Tom Woods or Rubicon Express.

yes from an auto tranny 4.0L XJ year doesnt matter.

everything that you take off with the DS take with you because you will need it to install the DS on your jeep.

well i just went ahead and dropped hte driveshaft off at the place, its a custom CV driveshaft so because of my lift im not so sure that shaft would be such a great idea. Otherwise why wouldnt everyone do this instead of a custom Tom Woods shaft? Anyway, its going to be $225 to have rebuilt, kinda sucks but ohh well. I need it done quick so yea.

most people do use a front DS, it is a VERY common mod makes it very nice because you have one spare for both driveshafts.

but at least you got it take care of.
