Default NSS won't slid out! Need advice.

I have a 98 xj and I'm having issues skidding the NSS off the shaft. I have performed this job before using this link I found listed below. I believe the shaft has rusted to the inside of the threaded part. I'm able to move the NSS back and forth. I have tried putting a small pribar behind the top portion of the NSS and wiggling it off. Still no luck! Right now I've put some PB blaster on it and I will have to fight another day. Hopefully letting it sit in that for a few days will break up the rust. The threaded part has four slits in it, so if the blasted won't sit in can I bend the threads back and slid it out? Does anyone have any advice for me? Thanks in advance!!

Sometimes they can be a pain. Best to use two pry points. One pry point tends to bind.

I forget so don't quote me but the shaft may unbolt from the inside. Would have to drop the pan to do this.

A while back a guy had some luck (CPTslackass)?.....He made/fit some wooden shim to wedge behind it, holding it out some/firm, then tapped/knocked on the end to drive the shaft IN. Wood would not be my first choice to get a crisp tap on, anyway he succeeded.

Default This will do!

Well I was reading on another website to just adjust it, so that's what I did. I sure wasn't thinking at first. I decided to just put it back for now and adjust it so the reverse lights work. The only thing is I can't start the engine in neutral. Everything else is fine. I will go get it inspected Monday.

Mine broke on my 98 when I tried to get it off. Tried for a very long time to get it off and I tried everything. Didn't happen.

I have yet to replace it but I am gonna try the cheap eBay one when I do. It's around $40-45 or so.

J, you might be able to just mess with it until you get all. If it were cleaned and all good, for sure, in your case...probably. Couldn't hurt to check those reverse light bulbs and grounds before spending too much time there.

Usually they need taken apart and the contacts cleaned. A penny works good for this.

Agreed^ The best I've gathered, after cleaning it, you just mess with it till everything works. 220 grit black emery paper would work well. Here's some links on the NSS>

Mine is a bit "gummy" Park hot, start in AM, run till hot, all's fine. Start cold, re-park the Jeep cold, it sticks, need to push the shifter a bit for it to make contact.

My "canned" Nss deal>>>

If you hold the key over, and jiggle the shifter in park or neutral and it starts, it's your NSS. http://bc4x4.com/tech/2010/jeep-neut...ty-switch-nss/

I fail to see why new ones are so expensive. Should be 50 bucks tops.

Supply and demand..volume I suppose. I'm going without an idiot temp sender...rather depend on my own senses than pay $25-30 for that little thing.
