my AX-15 came from a 96 and i need a 231... found a guy on CL parting out a 98 and i guess its a automatic... he only wants $50 for it... but i gotta figure out what years are the same... cant find good info on google at all... i know the 88 is a 21 spline cause it surely did not work on my 96 23 spline... but then also read there is a short and a large shaft... not sure what had what... also know the 4 bangers were ALL 21 spline... but i cant figure out what vehicles and years im frickin looking for... lol...

Wait... that doesn't make any sense... according to that all the automatics are 21 spline? And that's not right...

That chart is crap. From the paragraph next to it:

The AW4 had 21 splines through 1990. In 1991 (the same year the 4.0 HO was introduced) the AW4 splines increased to 23.

AW4 was 21 spline until the HO came out, then it went to 23.

correct... but what makes no sence now is that i just saw where it said the AW4 was the medium shaft 23 spline from 91+... so why the heck are they saying the medium shaft is RARE!!! almost every cherokee left is 91-01 AW4!!!

this sucks cause i want this transfercase cause its cheap as dirt and i cant even figure out if itll work or not... stupid internet... its finally failed me... lol... finally found something that i could not find on the internet...

its got 220k but i could just pull the front spline and stick it in my 90k 21 spline 231... heck its still cheaper then buying the 23 spline input by itself at $125 for the cheapest i could find...

Get it, if it doesnt work sell it for 100. It should work.
AFAIK the shaft length is always the same. Dont know where you got that from, but they should be castrated for spreading false information.

i got on pirate and did some searching like "231 swap" and stuff... there are different lengths... like novak says... but the mediums are not "rare" like they said... i need one from a AX-15 jeep... which frickin sucks cause there rare as crap as it is... even more so in 4x4 and untouched... it was already gone from the vehicle i got the AX-15 from or i would have grabbed it... i think this one would work but there wouldnt be as much spline teeth touching... and im not sure if it would mess with how everything seals up... i think im going to be stuck buying a new input for the one i have... looking to be the cheaper option now...

Default splines

hey guys, new guy here. So Im having trouble keeping up with this conversation. I have a 1996 cherokee 4x4 sport. My transfer case is leaking and im FInding, with extensive research ( in other words, google hasnt been completely helpful ), that either a rebuild kit for my t/c or purchase a rebuilt t/c are my options. I believe I have a NP 231, but your discussion of splines has me concerned? I have looked for any markings or labeling on my t/c, but no avail there either. So with that said, is the spline conversation something I need to worry about? Also, IVe researched youtube and google for step by step instructions with pictures if possible on how to remove the t/c. So far seems fairly simple. But knowing my luck, a few hour job will turn into a week?!! lol

Any suggestions or knowledge would be appreciated.

Lol! This thread has been dead for almost 8 yrs.

If it's an NP231, and it probably is, there should be a round, red & silver tag/medallion on the rear side of it. It should be stamped "NP231", iirc. Your MY will be a 23 spline "short" shaft. Pretty easy to find. May even find one for sale on the forum close to you.

Edit: You want an NP231 from a '91-up XJ if you decide to replace. If you have doubts about the splines, just count them.

Or measure the shaft diameter. I have those specs somewhere.

True. And, OP, I was in error: you want one from a '92-later. '91 still used a cable-driven speedo. Short input shaft protrudes 1.2".

Where is it leaking from? If it's from the rear output shaft (or maybe the front output shaft) then it's possible to replace just the seal. There's a Bleepin Jeep video for the rear output shaft seal for sure. I don't know about the front, but it might be possible.

You can swap the drives...

AW4 output splines

21 spline is about 1.08” diameter or 27mm

23 spline is about 1.22” diameter or 31mm
