Default NP 242 no FT

So i bought my xj a while ago and the shifter inside didnt had a FT 4H so i thought i have a 231, but few days ago i decided to clean the vehicle from all the mud that was under and to my suprise bang a 242 tcase... i tried shifting and get it to FT but nope... its obvious that the tcase has been swaped since my xj is 98 and the tcase is 89...What do i need to do to get the FT working?

Maybe...I would start there.

Might also need the shift linkage adjusted after swapping the gates.

here is how.

You should be able to find the gate and the bezel at a local salvage yard or on Ebay. A little more is needed if you want the indicator in the instrument cluster to work. You may need to adjust the linkage to get everything to sit right on the shift gate and bezel. I used 4WD Fulltime for a while before swapping out the gate and bezel by just feel.

I swaped the gate today and tried to do the linkage... After i unbolted the rod i tried moving the gears by hand underneath i couldnt really feel like i do it right... I only manage to move it 3 times instead of 4 no matter how hard i pulled it. I bolted up got into the jeep and i went for a test drive...2WD, 4H PT and 4L work but i cant engage 4H FT.

Is there any chance that someone used the case off a 242 to rebuild a 231?? I don't know if that's even possible, just a random thought.

Drop the front and rear shafts to check engagement and to make sure the lever at the case isn't running into anything.
