242 -> 242 "swap"
Just bought (almost stole) a 99 XJ that needs nothing but a new transfer case. Unfortunately, the last one blew up very impressively, so I don't have the half with the ID tag, but its definitely a 242. I bought one from a junkyard to replace it, and ran into something that no amount of searching has turned up info on. The case looks almost identical, but it was a 3 wire speedo sensor and 4 wire 4wd sensor. The harness on the Jeep has a pair of 2-pin connectors. The 4wd position sensor is right over the shifter on the replacement, but doesn't exist on my old case (I assume it was on the half that shattered) The yard swears this was off an XJ, but I think it may have been a ZJ. At any rate - if I get the connectors, is there any way to make an adapter harness? Or do I need to try and trade this for a different 242?

Can you post some photos of the old TC and the new TC.
A '99 242 will have a three pin connector on the Vehicle Speed Sensor (same for the 231) and a four pin connector on the mode switch (Three wires used).
Don't know where two pin harness connectors would be used, except that the 231 would only have a two wire harness connector.

Working on uploads now, but I think I just solved it....I swear the guy said 99, but I just went to check and its a 91, haha. I wasn't paying too much attention when I bought it considering it was only $150.

Yea, sorry, the Jeep is a 91. Yard doesnt have a 242 for my year, but has 231s, so I guess I'm gonna swap? Dont really care about FT 4WD. I 92 went to a 3 wire speedo, so I cant have a case beyond 91, but how early can I go back?

Alright, have a 231 in hand...but they gave me one from a 94 jeep, not a 91 to match. It has a 3 wire speed sensor, when it should be 2 wire. I take it this means I need the older cable driven sensor - can the sensors just be swapped in? My understanding is yes, just looking for confirmation before I bring ANOTHER case back to these guys.
