I have a 93 XJ went out today and when in 4 wheel low or high, while putting a strain on it like driving over a bump or small tree, nothing bad at all really not, or making a tight turn a knockin/bindin sound came from the transfer case around the shaft going to the front axle, but wouldnt make it when driving straight on flat ground, please some one help this is my first jeep and know nothing about them and am worried it something major, oh this is the first time i had it out in 4 wheel drive, again please help!!!!!!!

 

Do not engage 4wd on pavement or when you are going to get good traction, the driveline will bind during turns or whenever one axle starts going faster than the other. Part-Time 4wd should only be used on loose gravel, sand, mud, or anywhere you aren't going to get really good traction.

 

I wasnt on the road or anything was in the woods going up a slight small incline got hung up going over a fallin tree put it in 4hi and as soon as i went to go over it is when i started to here the knock/bindin sound and the tree was only maybe 12 inches round so not big at all, buddy said something about a chain insidebthe case might be loose or? Not sure whats wrong?

 

Ah, ok. You didn't mention and 90% of the time it's someone putting it into 4wd on the road that causes this.

Yeah, it could be the chain in the transfer case. I've not disassembled one yet to see how hard it is to fix them, though.

 

It just acts like something is keepin it from movin freely in the transfer case it will spin all most all the way around then bind up and break loose with a loud knock sound, need some serious help on this one!!!
