Default Not So Routine Maintance

Got a stock 99 4x4, auto with 140 K miles.

I've had this since it had about 33 K miles from a lease return. I drive this cherokee on ocation for 400 to 600 miles one way. Anyone have any suggestions concerning parts I should consider replacing w/ 140 K on them. Or, things I should give a good once over that typically fail slowly not all of a suddon. I'm maily interested in parts that would cause it to stop running and strand me.

Things I've done, or had done, in the past two years or so.

Drive side hub
shocks and new leaf springs
A/C compressor fan (did that today)
new wires, rotor, distributor cap
changed transmission filter and fluid
changed differential and transfer case oil/grease
new belt
new main seals and valve cover gasket
oil sensor

things I've been considering

Thermostat
starter
alternator
water pump
any pullies or tensionor pully I should consider
exhaust manifold (mechanic said its cracked but I can't tell)

Thanks.

I agree with that. And if it is the original radiator, as long as you're doing the water pump and plan on keeping the vehicle, put a new one of those in too. The lifespan of an OEM radiator is generally speaking not much more than the miles/years you have on your XJ. I just replaced the OEM radiator on my 99 a few months ago at 135k. An extra $100-200 and peace of mind is worth it. New radiator cap while you are at it too, as they are only about five bucks.

I generally don't do starters or alternators until they go as the longevity of them can be quite long.

Keeping a crankshaft position sensor in the glove box not a terrible idea as that is one engine management sensor that can and has (frequently) left jeepers stranded if it fails.

Unless your funds are unlimited, one does not change the altenator or starter for preventive maintenance.

If funds were unlimited, the OP could slip into his back-up Maserati 'til he had time to replace the XJ starter/alternator. LOL

used parts are proven parts
just because its new doesnt make it better i usually keep a few spares of parts like u joints and stuff but i only replace stuff if its worn out
the jeep gets a tune up when it misfires and I change the brakes when I cant stop anymore but I have a honda in the back yard as backup

thanks...the water pump has been my biggest worry but don't know how long they last. Anyone recommend a brand for a rebuilt or new one? I think several people have recommended the failsafe thermostate? I assume the factory stat must be a 210 as my jeep constantly runs at 210 and almost never deviates.

I guess I'll do the radiator hoses while I'm at it.

Any bad experiences with NOT replacing vacum lines and some of the connectors (on chevys these get micro cracks you can't see but show up as vacum leaks on a guage).

Never heard of a crankcase sensor. Guess I'll have to figure out what that is and where it is...

Oh! Any suggestions on radiator brands do's and don'ts?

Thanks for the input.

*Do NOT buy a rebuilt water pump! NO! Go new only. The failure rate of rebuilt/reman pumps isn't that good and a new one isn't much more than the others.

*Radiatorbarn.com is a great source for any radiator you might need. Give them a call

*Only about 4 coolant hoses. Buy formed hoses before you do the job.

*Use a 195 degree thermostat (that is what your XJ came with). I buy my Jeeps from Jeep and also like the Stant SuperStat. Do not buy a no-name thermostat as there is a lot of junk out there!!

Thanks...found a new Bosch water pump for about $40. Assuming their car parts are like their tools/appliances, I will go with it. Assuming there is no problem in matching mine.

Thanks for the radiator dealer tip too. Will probably go with a fail safe stat.

I would recommend a radiator/heater core flush, water pump and a FAILSAFE thermostat. The FAILSAFE saved me from cooking my engine. Upgrade the alt if possible.

They LOCK open at 240 keeping you overheating as long as you dont have a massive coolant leak.
