More info? What transfer case do you have? Does your shifter look like this? http://www.weatherlover1.com/clip_image016.jpg

That's a select trac system. The other is command trac. And what 4WD range are you trying to shift out of? 4LO, 4HI part time, 4HI full time? Need more info bud.

I wouldnt worry about it, the light is just a light... Shouldnt need a light to tell you youre in 4wd.
But; if you want it, go under the jeep and pull the 2pin plug on top of the tc and jump the wires. Turn the key on and see if the light is on; if not, you need a new bulb. If it is on, you just need a new switch. It unscrews from the top of the tc and is about 15 bucks.

the 4wd should be an easy switch... When driving just let off the gas, push into 2wd, give gas again. Sometimes you have to tap the throttle a few times, but it will pop out.
If the lever is not smooth between 4wd/2wd, you need to check fluids/shifter linkage.

ive got a 99 xj w/ the aw-4 and np242, good fluids and just over 100k, and although it has on the fly 4wd, i still gotta put it in neutral at lower speeds, at like 50, it usually works right away...

Default light bulbs?

Remove the dash trim and you should be able to remove the cluster that houses the indicator lights and look in the back i m pretty sure they're these super tiny bulbs. That would be my first guess.

i wasnt worried about the light to much because its been like that since i bought it 3 years ago just currious about what it could be. kinda assumed it is the bulb in the dash. But over the summer i changed the fluid in the transfer case and yes i checked its still full, but now recently using the 4wd in the snow its been a pain in the ***** to return to 2wd. It sometimes takes a combination of feathering the throtle and doing from neutral to drive to get it to dissengage. it use to go back to 2wd easily. and the lever moves smoothly between 4wd and 2wd just as it has over the past three years that ive owned it.
