Default noisy jeep - please help! (video)

hi everyone,

my car is a jeep cherokee 1995 4.0 petrol automatic.
im not sure of the mileage as the mileometer doesnt work but it has been used alot for towing.
it is really noisy, its kind of like a metro reversing! it is noisier when pulling away or when it is in 1/2/3rd gear. in 4th and 5th is is relatively quiet.
it has done this for a while but recently its got alot louder.
sometimes it also sounds like its boucing off the rev limiter but on the rev counter it is only on 2500 revs?!
i am suspecting the auto gearbox. what do you think.
i have video'd it so you can listen to it changing gear. you might need to turn the volume right up.
if it is the gearbox, is it a job worth getting done? it would have to go in a garage so how much work would it be?
thank you for any help you can give.

Sounds like transmission/gears, might just want to take it in and have it looked at.

Hey Shelly24, I think you already named the noise-maker. You said the "mileometer" doesn't work - it's called a speedometer, and the mileage indicator is called the odometer - that thing is cable driven and it has a square drive pin on the transmission end - I had a ride where that was damaged and wow what a racket it made - exactly as you described too. If you have the compunction to do it then climb underneath to find and disconnect the speedo cable from the transmission. That should stop the noise once and for all.

is it really that easy?! the speedo works, the miles just dont clock up, so i just need to look for a cable then take it out?

Cherryokee, I belive the 95 cherokee has a speed sensor (electric) not a speedo cable.

shelly24, I watched the video twice and don't really hear anything terrible.
Have you checked the ATF (automatic transmission fluid) level?
When was the last time you did a tune up?

I hear it, sounds like a manual trans in reverse. Im guessing worn gears somewhere, i never heard that sound in an auto trans, maybe transfer case, or axles? Just a guess. You should check all fluids, trans, axles, t case.

its a shame the sound isnt that loud in the video because it is really loud when you are sitting in the car, it gives me a headache!
i dont know when its last service was, i got it in july and havnt done one yet
the person that had it before me stupidly used it for 6 months in perm 4wd!!! so it wouldnt be surprising if its something to do with the axles or transmission.
how do i check the ATF level?
your right though it does sound like a manual in reverse. it also sometimes jumps as if it hits the rev limiter but its only on 2000 rpm?!

it may be time for the scrapyard in the sky? i has spent sooo much on this car its untrue.
not sure if its worth taking it into the garage or not. im certainly not too clued up to do these things myself.

Seems like bad transmission for me... You might wanna bring it to your local mechanic and seek for some personal advice...

shelly24, I would suggest you drain and re-fill the transfer case with fresh fluid DEXRON II - DEXRON III here is the repair manual for it:
http://www.lunghd.com/Downloads_and_Links/NP231.pdf

I think the "rev-limiter" issue is telling you it needs a tune-up, fresh plugs at least (even better, new plugs, cap and rotor). These two suggestions should only cost a few Pounds and will tell us alot.

The automatic transmission fluid dipstick is located on the spark plug side of the engine, about 1 foot forward of the firewall. The atf level should be checked after a short drive, engine running, on level ground. If you need to add atf (fluid) it is added via the dipstick tube with a funnel and tube like this:

Sounds to me like the transfer case has a worn chain [Too much slack in the chain] Also the speedometer does not use a cable in a 1995, it is gear driven at the transfer case and creates an electrical pulse to operate the speedometer.

Hmm, they left it in 4x4? Im going with what radio flyer said, the chain in the t case brobly stretched from the stress. You should find what the prob is before you junk it.

- Sounds like the 1951 Austin A40 Devon I had when I was a kid. First and cheapest thing to do is check the ATF level. If low you may have a worn and leaking rear seal or other transmission issues. The T-case could be suspect but it would be worth getting it diagnosed before you spend any significant money on it.

thanks for your help. i topped up a ATF today but it only took a little bit and booked it in for next week for a check up in the garage but guess what...
i drove it about 300 miles today towing a horse trailer and its now not making the noise, it sounds really throaty and lovely and sounds like its responding to the throttle spot on..
expect now it has like a weird squeeling noise! lol. Its not when its idleing, just at drive and it doesnt get faster or slow, its fairly regular, would suspect brake squeel if it wasnt so regular. weird hey!

hehehe crazy jeeps! i suspect your serpentine belt needs to be tightened (or replaced) from the squealing description, 1 problem at a time and she'll be good soon.
