Default Noise from xj

I throw on the 31s sometimes when I'm in the mood. I normally drive with 235s and its all quiet, But once the 31s goes on, it make noises when driving. It doesn't matter if I'm going straight, left or right, it isn't loud and sometimes it isn't there at all, but most of time it's there, I can feel it on my steering wheel.

I asked a mechanic to sit along while I drove, he said there's nothing. And that I have wrong size tires on. Huh? Hello? Wrong size tires? It's so obvious that it wasn't an accident lol.

Anyway I checked both hubs, looked fine. Can anyone help me out?

It's 99 Cherokee 4.0 aw4 231

If it doesn't do it with one set of tires, but does it with the others, then your problem lies in either the tires or wheels. I'm assuming they're mounted on a different set of wheels, and you swap them over entirely?

Do you know if the wheels are balanced?

What kind of tire are the 31s? May just be road noise from the tread.

What PSI are you running in your 31s?

It's only on one set of tires. It's Dakota definity mud terrains, it didn't make noise at the beginning and after few weeks, it started making noise. By noise I mean feel on the floorboards and the steering wheel (I am deaf so I can't hear)
It's at 30 psi.

Yes different set of rims. I bought it off Craigslist with the tires already on it. There's balancing lugs on the edge of rims. I would assume they are balanced.

When I used to have mud terrains, you could feel em everywhere. Pants, steering wheel, everything would rattle. Threw on all terrains and it's like I'm on a friggin cloud. I guarantee it's just the roughness of the tire and nothing else. Cause when you put your street tires back on the noise goes away yeah?

And don't assume they're balanced... Take them in

The noise also worsen when I brake too. I have drove mud terrains on othe vehicles in the past. It doesn't feel the same.

FWIW, the rattling and shaking my BFG muds brought were worst when slowing to a stop. From 15-0.

You could always try to lower the PSI and see how it handles. But I honestly just think it's the tires themselves causing it. Especially if when you put your street tires back on, it goes away

Yeah. It does the same when slowing down Wow I wonder why mud terrains on my other truck doesn't make any noises at all and this one does.

Thanks for your time

Maybe your other ones are newer? Not as dry? Still squishy? Less PSI?

There's a lot of different factors.

I think the other ones was balding and this set is kinda new. I am well aware of the "road rumble" noise common with mud terrains, but this noise is just unusual. It makes me cringe when I slow down or come to a stop.
Next set of tires that I plan to purchase is all terrains, I don't do mud or snow that often. Hopefully they will be more quieter.

Guaranteed they will be. Post a picture of your mud terrains, I want to see how aggresive the tread we're talking here.

Is this the same tire you have? They are pretty aggressive. I would agree, this is likely the cause of the noise.

Yes that's same tread pattern.
