My 88 cherokee just did this to. Put in new battery and still had the same problem. Check all the wiring and fuses all were good!! Got mad and hit the starter with a hammer.....problem fixed!! The starter had stuck half engaged and blocked current flow. I don't know if its the same problem but give it a shot. I don't know much about grand cherokees but hey its free diagnostsics.

Try wiggling the shift level while turning the key, or try starting in neutral. If either of these techniques allows the engine to turn over, you have a problem with your "neutral safety switch". They can often be refurbished to restore full function.

And yes, tapping on the starter gently with a rubber mallet or hammer can sometimes yield results; if it does, replace your starter.

Your computer should have a stored code with a check engine light. I'd have that code read to make sure you're not missing anything.

You do NOT need a dealer for any of this stuff!
