Default No Start, No Click, Nothing

1992 Cherokee Sport - Automatic Trans

I was driving my jeep across town on a warm day and on my way back stopped for groceries. When I came back out, it wouldn't start. No click, no turning over, no lights, nothing. Got a jump start and it ran just fine back to my house. Now it's parked in the garage and has the same issue.

Battery voltage is fine, and the gauge indicated 14 while it was running.

My brother-in-law thinks it could be the starter has grounded out, and I am wondering if possibly an NSS issue or a ground issue.

Any thoughts are welcome.

Thanks in advance.

I don't know what your BIL means by starter has grounded out but a jump start uses the same starter and wiring.

Have you cleaned all wiring connections -- positive and ground?

To check NSS hold the key in the start position and move the shifter from Park to Neutral and back.

I would start by cleaning the battery terminals and ALL of the grounding points. Which include the battery terminals, battery to fender, oil dipstick, rear of the head to the fire wall, ignition coil and the one that many forget to clean is the mounting surface between the starter and the engine block. Like Pelican said. It wouldn't be the starter if it start with a jump. Also it wouldn't be the NSS. The reason I say this is because the NSS wouldn't cause the lights not to come on. My money is on a bad connections related to the battery. I would also have the battery load tested. It can read the correct voltage and still have a bad cell. Check those things out and let us know what you find and if you are still having the same problem we can go from there.

X2!! I was recently having a similar issue. Jeep would start up fine several times a day then the next day there would be nothing. So I would fiddle with the positive clamp on the battery and it would start up. This went on for about two weeks until I decided to get a new positive clamp. Haven't had an issue since and it's been about a month.

If it was the starter, then a jump wouldn't have done any good.

x Eleventy Brazillion on cleaning ALL of the grounds and a thorough inspection of the Positive and Negative Battery Cables.
