Default No reverse in 2wd?

I'm looking at another '90 XJ............mainly because it's a 4 door and has no body damage. The owner says it won't go into reverse unless it's in 4wd. Any ideas what would cause that?

X2 transfer case, rear end shouldn't be an issue if it goes forward in 2wd

I would verify it on a test drive first. Sounds screwy to me.

Or 2wd is really Neutral? I'd go drive it. Too much guessing.

Well in any case, I'm mainly interested in the body and the fact that the engine has just over half the miles mine does. As far as the rest of the drive train, I can use parts from my 2 door if necessary. It seems to me that if it was a t-case issue, forward wouldn't work in 2wd either. I'll just have to give it a test drive and find out for myself.

Yea, see for yourself, it just doesnt sound right. Whether its the tcase or the diff, if it works forward it will work backwards. My guess is that theres an issu with the trans and it slips like crazy in reverse but if its in 4w low, the gear reduction allows it to move.

I just re-read the add and it states that "it won't go into reverse unless it's in 4wd". Gear poker perhaps? If that's the case, I really don't feel up to converting it to automatic. Is this the one?

The one I really want is much nicer, newer(94), and just happens to be my favorite color. Unfortunately, I just don't have the funds.

I recently missed out on an unbelievable deal due to lack of funds. Somebody who is moving out of the U.S., was selling a very nice looking 94 country for $1,750. I think is was on Craigslist for only about 2 days before it was gone.
