yes it will
I am trying to find the info
but the aw4 has a manual valve system
that is over ridden by the TCU to get better operation supposedly
you can make a manual shift box also to control the solenoids

let me peek into the manual
"MANUAL SHIFTING TEST
(1) This test determines if problem is related to
mechanical or electrical component.
(2) Stop engine and disconnect transmission control
module or module fuse.
(3) Road test vehicle. Shift transmission into each
gear range. Transmission should operate as follows:
† lock in Park
† back up in Reverse
† not move in Neutral
† provide first gear only with shift lever in 1–2
position
† operate in third gear only with shift lever in 3
position
† operate in overdrive fourth gear in D position.
(4) If transmission operates as described, proceed
to next step. However, if forward gear ranges were
difficult to distinguish (all feel the same), or vehicle
would not back up, refer to diagnosis charts. Do not
perform stall or time lag tests."
^^So, without the TCU. if it does shift properly as the manual says, its the TCU?
hmm.. anyways, if my TCU is bad, would that manual shift box still work if I go that way?

So what happened today:
When the exhaust was back on, i went out with the TCU unplugged, the tranny acted as per the manual. Only 1st in '1-2', only third in '3' and only fourth in 'D'. So that takes out the mechanical things, right? Coming back to electrics, I haven't had a chance to check the TPS again carefully, but I will within a few minutes. Is there any way to check the TCU?
HOWEVER: With the TCU plugged, it would shift in '1-2' to second gear at about 5000 revs. And I couldn't figure out what gear it was in '3' or 'D', its supposed to start from 1st gear in 3 and D, but it doesnt, its either 3rd or 4th, its not the second gear I'm sure. When ever im in 2nd gear, I shift it to '3', RPMs go down considerably and its looks like 4th gear puts on.
