Default Newbie question

Hi, a newbie here. I just got my first jeep! https://www.cherokeeforum.com/images...cheesygrin.gif Its a 1996 jeep cherokee 2.5L turbo. As soon as I saw it I just had to have it.

Being 1996 it's a bit bashed up and I've been looking for some parts. I've not seen anything that describes the model I've bought, but lots of parts for the XJ. Do you think mirrors for the XJ would fit my jeep? And what's the difference between the two models?

Thanks

And what model did you get since you differentiate between it and an XJ?

The Jeep "XJ" is the same exact thing as a "Cherokee", It's a just a factory code name or something. IF it was a newer Cherokee in Europe (Which would be called the Liberty in the USA) it would be called a KJ or a KK.

Just few examples:
XJ = 1984-2001 Cherokee
KJ = 2001 - 2006 Liberty (Replaced the Cherokee, still called the Cherokee outside the USA)
kk = 2008-2013 Liberty (Still called the Cherokee outside the USA)
KL = 2014 Cherokee (is to replace the Liberty)
ZJ = 1993-1998 Grand Cherokee
WJ = 1999-2004 Grand Cherokee
WK = 2005-2010 Grand Cherokee
WKII = 2011 - Current Grand Cherokee
YJ = 1986-1995 Wrangler
JK = 2006-Current Wrangler
...Damn I should make a guide on this!

Wikipedia is a great place to figure the codes out, it's such common info that it can't be wrong on there lol.

Hi Guys

Thanks very much for the responses.

I'm in the UK. The model is the 1996 5 door turbo jeep cherokee 2.5L (is that right?).
So, from what you're saying 76Mustang, it's an XJ. Thanks for clearing that up.

Basically I'm a biker so I've never really researched into cars or jeeps. London drivers have changed dramatically over the past 4 years and I'm doing a refurb on a house; hence the jeep (it's difficult to carry 2by4's on an 800). And besides, the jeep looks so good damn good. In spite of the work + a few chips and dents, it looks great. I'm amazed by the amount of torque the vehicle has got.

Thanks again for your help.

Got any pics? We didn't get the diesel over here except in the real early years and it was the Renault one.

Default Parts again!

Hi Guys,

So, the 4WD 2.5L Turbo diesel was only produced between 1994 and 2001 according to wiki. So, I still think it could be classed an xj. I mailed one garage which said there was a model change in 1996, but I've found it doesn't pertain to the diesel. I'm trying to figure out whether the mirrors I am trying to buy will fit the L. You think they're fairly ubiquitous?

So, have just worked out how to modify the pic I took. Hope it's attached. If it works I post up some more.

Yes. There are three main versions though: manual, toggle, and electric. They all have the same bolt pattern, just be sure to get the same type as what's in there.

The model change they're talking about is likely the cosmetic changes which came on the 97+ Cherokees.

The mechanicals are still the same, but the looks got cleaned up a bit. Here's my 99 2 door; you can see how the front end (and rear end) are a bit rounder and cleaner than the 84-96 body style.

For original parts, you can also check out quadratec.com, they have a lot of OEM parts.

Did you remove the throttle body to do it? If so, did you replace the gasket? Knock any vacuum lines off? Disconnect the battery by chance?

Did you handle the IAC roughly? Pull on it or push on it? Check the connector. Make sure the pins aren't bent and it's snapping together properly.
