newbie with a question
Hi all great forum guys and girls!!!
Ok i have just bought a jeep cherokee 4lt auto 2000 model which i was very pleased with But then all went wrong and my smiles turned to frowns The problem i have is that the gearbox seems to slip?? i have read similar posts related to this but!!! my gearbox is fine when cold but once warmed up it slips?? have had the gearbox oil changed but not the filter which is in the post and will be fitted hopefully by the end of the week, i have ruled out the torque converter as when they break they stay broke from what i have read? As i said it drives 100% fine when cold and engine is strong with no smoke rattles etc its just when it gets warm the slip happens?? any help would be great!!!!

Too much fluid isn't good, but I don't think it would cause the problems you're having.
I know most folks think additives are the Devil's work, Lucas Transmission Treatment saved my bacon twice. Once with a 91 XJ, and once with a Pontiac Transport Minivan. Both trannies were badly neglected by the Previous Owner, and when I did some regular maintenance both trannies were slipping, or just erratic.
I drained a liter of tranny fluid, and added a bottle of Lucas. One bottle helped the 91 XJ quite a bit, and the Transport took two. Eventually the Transport's tranny gave out, but it lived an extra 18,000 kms.
It might be worth a try to drain off a quart of fluid and adding Lucas. I hope it works for you...
HTH!

Did you use ATF +4 when you refilled? There is a possibility that is some of the problem if so. That fluid can cause slipping in certain AW4's. (high miles, worn)

Hi all, Ok an update with my slipping gearbox! Right i bought some lucus additive as it sounded like the best option to start with. put it all in and took a driv round the block and all seemed fine, decided to go for further drive and dam it started slipping! in detail it was driving fine for 30 miles then slowly started to slip, from then on in 3 miles it would not move anywhere just revs and no motion, got picked up by recovery and taken home, a time frame of roughly 1.5 hours and started it up and it drove off the lorry and on to my drive??? So am i looking at a gearbox over heatingproblem or do i have to face it and geta new/recon gearbox??? gutted really as i love driving this jeep and not gonna be able to shell out on new gearbox£££.
Cheers Mark
