Yo, Baron, easy with the Renny bashing. We have some serious Renny fans here....I be one of them!! They can be had for nothing, can be dignosed with a simple multi meter, take miles as good, or better than a H.O, and run like a top!!

I have been wanting to buy an XJ for a good while now.

My question is....what is the best year (best bang for the buck) for an XJ that will be a all purpose weekend wheeler.

I want something that I can drive out to the trails and then drive back.

Either is stock form...or later...customized.

However, there are a couple of things that are appealing to me:

* Automatic
* V6
* Somewhat cushy....the girlfriend wants some creature comforts.

I appreciate any and all advice.

Thank you...

99 good for many reasons.
Last year of high pinion 30 front.
297 joints
non disconnect
8.25 29 spline rear. (except for abs models with dana 35)
intake
only 1 cat
distributor

Wow...thanks for all the advice!!

So if I am processing this correct...91-99 are the best years for the "best bang for the buck?"

I also heard 97-99 were probably the most solid?

I just want to clarify cuz I have a solid 1979 chero and want a solid XJ.

Is there a website that can give me the different option choices for all the years of the XJ's?

Thanks again....

You are 100% right about being able to use an multi meter to fix the Renix system.
My personel grudge with the Renix system is having lived with it for 18 years now I'm tired of fixing the darn thing. Most of my friends have the chry. system and haven't ever had to fix thiers!

On a side note, since I installed Hood vents and lowered underhood temps I haven't had to replace any more TPS's. Happyness reigns ! To anyone I may have upset, the beers are on me if we meet. RB

As a follow up to the Renex era XJ's I'd like to clarify that the Renex system is ok BUT. The Aftermarket Industry doesnot make anything for the 90 and older models. Look anywhere and the item discription will state 91 and up. The 90 and older XJ's also have the MONDO ****ty closed cooling systems.

If it ain't got a cap on the radiator, pass it by.

Im still looking for a difference in 97, 98, and 99...they all seem to be teh same to me.. so why would you pick 99 as teh best? they all have teh same axles, trannys, motors, t-cases...the only difference i see is teh intake runners in 99...

i personally like the 91-95 (no airbags) looks on teh interior, the old school steering wheel and boxy dash. drive a 98 because teh outside looks better and has some more safety for teh family. So it is a toss up. I personally hate the 96 because teh steering wheel looks like crap.. iknow its trivial, but it is something i dislike.
